Impreza Spec D
Discussion
Hi all,
I am condsidering an impreza STI hawk eye, and the Spec D seems to appeal due to its more discreet approach. Are they exactly the same as a normal STI underneath the exterior? It would be the first time I've owned such a car, and would like an idea of servicing and running costs, i'm used to a hot hatch. The insurance is actually a reasonable £700, not bad for a 27 year old.
Also is it worth seeking out an STI with PPP, does it make a big difference?

I've just been through a similar process to you. Yes, the same as an Sti and yes, the PPP is well worth it. I drove one with and one without, much better feel to the one with PPP. 18'' wheels are best too IMHO. A surprisingly comfortable ride too. I expected filling-rattling hardness but it's quite compliant. Then I drove an RB320 and had to have one. But I do like the SpecD's discreetness having come from a Legacy Spec B saloon.
Edit: Direct from the brochure, the differences are:
de-badged, silver 10 spoke 17'' alloys, fog lamps, Prodrive lower front mesh grille, WRX low-level spoiler, black carpet with extra sound-deadening, black leather (not heated), Pioneer ICE with Ipod connector, bluetooth and mp3 connectivity, Smartnav satnav, leather gear knob, steering wheel and handbrake lever with red stitching. Limited to 300 vehicles.
Note if you change the spec by remapping etc, your insurance will most likely go up, whereas the PPP may make no difference, it certainly doesn't through Subaru Assured.

Hi mate, the spec-D is a great car and the only real difference from a standard Sti is the low level spoiler, i think a sun roof and heated leather seats.
PPP will take the car from about 265bhp to about 300bhp so it does make a big difference although its not the end of the world if the car doesnt have it. About £1,300 will get you a full exhaust system and a re-map which should give you more power than the PPP and the ECU will be programmed specificly for your car rather than a new set of standard settings like the PPP, if that makes sence??!!
