Now this isn't a rant about using employers time to scour the internet for ways to procrastinate, after all it would be a bit hypocritical posting about it here.

However some folks push the boundaries a little too far, the gent sat in front of me makes frequent use of a site that from what I gather glimpsing over his shoulder upon occasion is the swingers equivalent of PH. I'm not sure what to make of it, should I be morally outraged, should I accept that it's his choice as an adult to email "cute warm honey" in office hours to arrange meeting at services on the M1 and that maybe I should stop invading his privacy, at the end of the day what I'm certain of I just think its amazing that the company I'm working at at present has such slack IT policy that it allows unfiltered access to the whole web.

Iain

It's in our Company Handbook that they specifically do not monitor internet usage, and that should they decide to, they will inform us in writing before undertaking!;)

No you should use his PC when he is away from it and re-arrange the meeting to your own choice of location and time. smile

If someone is getting the job done then what's the problem?

The only person I know who's been sacked for inappropriate use of an office machine had also managed to right off two company cars in a month. That to me is a sensible approach.

I spend all day browsing forums or playing crap web-games unless someone asks me to type up an invoice or the phone rings. It's boring, but tbh what else do they expect me to do if there's no work?

Lucky me our internet is unrestricted as we're an advertising agency (and naturally sell to 18+ businesses!) but I don't do anything that's NSFW.

I imagine if they were watching me I'd have been stopped sometime within the previous 8 weeks which have been spent trying to achieve new hi-scores on Trial Bike : Dynamite :P

Same here, I have some maintenance to do, I have to be around in case something goes wrong, but I'm not going to sit here polishing widgets and navel gazing 12 hours a day if there is nothing work-like to do.

A great manager sits next to me and we spent last week watching the olympics on our PC's, the boss came over and talked to the manager about the BMXing and I (stupidly) just said "Yeah I've got it on in the background".

To which I got the high-pitched-hopefully-joking "Oooh, looks like we'll have to find you some work to do!"

That was a week ago and nothing's been put on my lap. I don't mind doing work; I do it when I get it, but for christ's sake don't find me work just for the sake of time-filling; if it's that detrimental, fire me xD

I have always told my boss that when I resign it will be in writing on a full-size colour copy of my arse.

Just out of interest ...

If a company was to monitor internet usage, are they able to measure the amount of time each individual spends on the internet?

Is there any cunning ways to beat the system?

Do they have to legally inform you of the tracking before it starts?

I use it as there is no work to do. I still get told off sometimes, so just sit there and stare at a blank desktop, I don't have a clue what they expect me to do? I get told I got to look like I'm working so I see it as better than bringing in a newspaper or book (that is also banned here).

Ooooh yes.

The detail in which you can go to is quite, quite scary.

Possibly, but you will be staring at your P45 if you are caught trying.

Depends on your company's IT policies.

I often consider cracking the book out of my bag and reading it; I could probably get through a load of books if I did that; but for some reason I fear it might make me look like I'm slacking; even though at current I may appear to be typing - But it's typing on PH! xD

I share your amazement. Before the internet, did companies allow employees to sit at their desks on non-work related activities for hours on end? I doubt it yet now any worker with an internet access (certainly the ones on PH) consider it acceptable.

No I seem to remember just sitting around drinking coffee and discussing your chosen sport with those in the immediate vicinity.
