1998 XJ8 4.0L Gearbox fault
Discussion
Having trolled the forums on the net, I was wondering if anyone knew how to replace the Transmission Range Sensor Switch that is located on the side of the auto box?
I have been in 'limp home' mode for a week now and know that this component is at fault, after having the code P0706 pulled from the unit.
Ihave ordered a new switch from Jaguar, but still a little un-sure how to replace it!
Anyone with any clues or experience in this area?

Hi sparky, I've done a few, it goes something like this:I have been in 'limp home' mode for a week now and know that this component is at fault, after having the code P0706 pulled from the unit.

Shift the transmission to neutral, disconnect the battery ground cable, raise the vehicle, disconnect the range sensor's electrical connector. Look at the range sensor before you loosen the bolts,(you probably will need to clean it off and shine some light on it), you will notice there is a white plastic center that fits over the gear selector shaft and it has indented lines on it that should line up with the line running through the middle of the selector shaft. Also note as you look at the new range selctor that the bolt holes are actually slightly rectangular in shape. This allows you some movement to get the new range selector's indented lines to line up with the line on the end of the gear selector shaft. now unbolt the old range selector and bolt on the new one, making sure the marks line up.
The rest is opposite of the removal instructions.
Hope this helps.
