crankcase smells, maybe
Discussion
Ok next on my list of things to worry about is the smell inside the cabin. To me it seems like "cranckcase" smell especially noticable when the car has been idling for a while and I pull away. I'm wondering about the breather on the passnger side rocker cover? Has anyone else had a problem like this? Or anything like it. I know it's hard to tell from a post but I'm wondering if there's a few standard tried and tested changes that could be used to improve matters and maybe one of these might help.
Any ideas?
Cheers,
Neil

If you have an open breather it's going to let fumes out of the engine and make the cabin stink. Ideally you'd employ a pcv valve and draw those fumes into the inlet tract where they'll get burnt. Or you can buy a kit that extracts them into the exhaust system. If you want to keep an open breather you could use a remote pipe directed to the front of the engine bay, lower down.
Have you checked the grey breather filter on the O/S rocker cover and the pipe to the inlet manifold?
They sometimes get blocked with muck and carbon deposits which may then push fumes from the crankcase
out of the small open breather on the N/S rocker cover rather than being sucked back into the engine.
Just a thought.
Paul.

That seems entirely reasonable but the standard system/set-up seems to be one bank (O/S) that's hooked in to the I/L and the other bank just as an open breather. In the past on old fords I sometimes just took a tube a vented the crankcase well out the way - I guess I could try this - I don't have much to lose. If it doesn't solve it I can remove it again.Cheers, Neil

^ There should be a one way valve to restrict the amount of air flowing into the engine. If not then the restriction will be the pin hole orifice on the n/s rocker cover.
And the constant piston blowby, the fumes are only exiting from the grey breather on the o/s rocker cover, that pin hole is doing bugger all,you still have crankcase evacuation at all times though. Gassing Station | Griffith | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
