Hi everyone, i'm by no means a detail freak, nor do i have a special car but when i wash my car i become rather mad at all the little blemishes and tar spots on my paintwork. GRRRR>
Anyway i was wondering if you guys in the know can recommend me a few products to a) remove the tar spots and b) remove those annoying key scratches around the door locks (previous owner must've been a bit daft as it's remote locking)
Oh also any good tyre products to give them that nice sheen.

AG Tar remover is pretty good stuff for a)

As for removing scratches around the door, I'd try with a polish such as AG Super Resin Polish and a sponge applicator, you'll need to use a lot of elbow grease.

(Previous owner may not have been as daft as you think, could they be caused by wearing rings?)

Hope this helps, I'm no expert myself.

ETA: Just seen the last sentence about the tyres This stuff is pretty good, just don't leave it in your boot for it to spill out, you will never get it all out. rolleyes

Thanks for that bud. I think i could get into this detailing thing, i tend to never be able to just wash my car, i end up going a bit mad and clean the bloody door hinges.
The misses thinks i'm mad. How does this clay stuff work then?

Get some Bilt Hamber clay, you can use water as a lubricant.

Basically you rub it over your freshly washed bodywork & it gently lifts off bonded contaminents, leaving a lovely smooth surface for the wax of your coice.

How do you clean this clay stuff after use?

I think its disposable, just don't use it all at once, and fold it in on itself to get a fresh side, when there are no more fresh sides, chuck it. Oh and if you ever drop a clay bar, chuck it.

HTH.

get some autosmart tardis, don't bother with the ag t&g remover, it's expensive in comparission to the volume you get with the tardis. this will sort the tar spots. the bilt hamber clay is a good shout as you'll save money on detailer as lube. although for a beginner the megs quick clay set you can get it a cracking clay to start with. a clay bar can last the average user a year or 2 if stored correctly. all depends on how much you use it. only really should be claying once a year anyway. as said if you drop it bin it.

polish wise ag srp is ok. it contains a lot of fillers so you'll find that the scratches start to appear again after a few weeks when they start to break down. get some menzerna intensive polish and a german applicator pad. use the white side of this to do the correction work.

You could always get a detailer to do some paint correction in the first instance!!!!

How much is it for a detail? Not so fussed about the plastics and interior as it's something i enjoy doing, it's just the correction on the paint that bothers me. I doubt anyone notices it but i know it's there when i'm polishing and it really winds me up.

Depends on the state of the car, anywhere from £100 upwards really, my rate is £15 an hour.

From what i can see with my untrained ey, it has minor shoe scuffs in the door shout/sill area and minor key scrapes around the lock and light swirling and a bit of tar on the lower body.

£15 per hour is an absolute steal tbh. most detailers charge in the region of £30 per hour for good machine polishing.

I realise I'm cheap!!!!!!

Really, for me, it's a sideline at the moment, if it takes off the great, but I realise in the current economic climate I'm unlikely to be able to make a living off just detailing.

I have done loads of freinds & family cars & feel after 20 or so cars I am at a level that I could start to earn some extra pocket money.

I have the correct tools such a Brinkman torch, Cyclo polisher, paint thickness gauge etc, the price is in no way indicitive of poor workmanship.

My website is getting over 50 hits a day (not much but increasing daily).
