And I have just had an e-mail offering pre-order at Warehouse Express (and presumably other stockists).

Oh Chuff. Was expecting it to be out at PhotoKina (?) in Sept. Was going to put the D80 up for sale this weekend while it was still current and buy a new D300.

Still think I'll go for the D300 for the pro body and improved AF, but anybody know what the D90's selling for?

It does video, apparently. I'm not sure whether I like that idea or not, but I guess it can't hurt...

Don't like the video idea personally. Sounds like a wonderful way to get that sensor /electronics nice and warm and full of noise. Personally, I've been known to keep my camera in the fridge to keep the noise levels down!

I was taking photos with the D3 yesterday and a bloke I had been talking to about my upgrade said:

"I thought you said your new camera was going to be less noisy"

I said, "It is"

he said (in all seriousness) "It sounded pretty loud as you were taking photos just now".

rolleyes You just can't win can you.

At least he didn't ask you to turn the 'click' noise off in the menu... maybe we need 'church mode'... the shutter noise does seem to get louder the higher up the range you get - fps/spring power I guess.

Canon have an S (silent) mode - less fps but quieter shutter.

Hmm, wonder if a firmware upgrade would do that? Oh yes, and a bigger histogram too please Mr Nikon, if you're watching.

well - that's my Birthday pressie sorted out then! What do reckon the price will settle to? I see Warehouse Express now have the D80 at £450 so I'm guessing about £550

Weirdly enough the old F4 did have a continuous slient mode. It was not truly slient but it did brake the mirror on the return so it did not come down with such a slapping noise - wonder why they got rid of the function?

Some sample shots here (not full res), more interestingly there is a video clip of the movie mode. I was initially sceptical - but the 'spider' video is pretty neat smile
Looks like its never really going to be a 'normal' movie camera (no af - though surely they could make a contrast-based af mode? they wouldn't have to lower the mirror for that...) but for narrow dof on fast lenses it'll be neat smile

Cheers.

Cost I expect, if it was mechanical. Instead, put 40,000 functions in the menu and sell them as 'added value...'

There's an awful lot of wedding togs out there and they all have to work in quiet churches, not to mention civil ceremonies. But hey, let's put 'movie mode' in instead to encourage the gadget freaks... rolleyes

Only one thing for it I'm afraid, Leica M6 with the Noctilux lens and a bit of 400 ASA film smile Mind you the cost is a little prohibitive !

As a random piece of photo knowledge / hearsay I think the Leica M series was the only camera allowed in US and UK courts as the shutter mechanism was so quiet. It might be just the right thing for during the ceremony.

The other option would be to use a pellicle mirror arrangement a la Canon EOS RT from the 1990's. No mirror slap there and with the low noise of sensors now no worries about the slight loss in light transmission.

f1.0 is not actually as handy as you think - not very much is sharp!

Or go back to basics and make the exposure with the lens cap smile Not much use for freezing movement though...

Agreed, judging exposure could be a bit hit and miss there !

Ah the EOS RT, god how I wanted one of those back when life was easy and no one had ever heard of Chromatic Aberration, Noise, Pixel Peeping and corrupt memory cards. IIRC the fixed(didn't move and let light through if I remember?) mirror meant you could get away with a longer shutter speed anyway.
