Person A attacks and seriously injures my family member.

I track down A (who is shall we say an adult male). I then shoot him with a handgun in the knees, hands and bks.

I don't mean to kill him and I do the courtesy of calling 999 and getting him an ambulance before I do the shooting to get him medical assistance straight away (so he doesn;t die)

The aim is to put him through suffering, give him a st life.

So, what punishment crime would you say that is? Attempted murder? even if i didnt mean to kill him?

what if he died 4 weeks later due to the injuries?

hypothetical, of course

You'd probably go down for life for being a psychopath - pre-meditated, cold blooded, no remorse etc.

I will have to agree with this one, howevwer 5 years is an extraordinary amount of time, I would say maybe 1.5-2 years would do it. By 5 years you may not even give a damn to do anything.

As for the implied punishment, you may be thinking cloudy if you possibly believe you will be let off without atleast an attempted murder charge. I sure as hell wouldnt risk it.

I say wait a year or two and run up on him with a sledge hammer and crack both his knees out, never walk again.

Problem is, I believe you want him to know it was you who gave him a beating and took his legs away, and that my friend will require an SOLID alibi if you intend on him knowing you did it.

Personally, I wouldnt risk it. I know you want him to know you are beating him so he knows why, but for the sake of YOUR life, wear a mask and do it quick and never look back.

Why have your life ruined for a scum bag like that?

Exactly - it's like all the thriller movies where they don't kill the person and he then comes back again. If a jobs worth doing...

Because you would have had motive and planned the attack, attempted murder or GBH with intent are what I would imagine they would throw at you.

Personally I would wait a few years and either catch said fella alone in a dark place using some lead pipes, a roll or two of gaffer tape and a couple of large men for assistance.

Or wait a while and goad him into attacking you, at which point you could defend yourself resonably and if you had planned carefully land a disabling blow.

I think that peace is superior to war. However it is fair to defend your right to live in peace.

wouldn't be attempted murder - no mens rea.

Depends on whether you were speeding on the way to knee cap him or how full your wheelie bin was at the time of the attack!
Either way expect to be fined by the enviroment agency for the polution of the gunshots

no mens rea for murder - but mens rea for GBH/wounding with intent (or conspiracy to do the same)

Surely anyone prosecuting for what the OP suggests would try and prove attempted murder first.

Totally ignorant as to what mens-rea means rolleyes I presume its a legal term in latin.

i recon if he died, and you just intended to hurt him, probably manslaughter???

apparently you can get done for that if you kill someone in a fight in a pub etc??

personally, i would go down the beat with a sledge route.
