Move into IT Sales?
Discussion
Im considering a career change into IT sales. Ive been running my own internet ecommerce businesses for a few years now and fancy a change. I used to work in computer games as a 3d artist but have since gain a lot of business computing experience for obvious reasons.
I dont strictly have much sales experience but am good on the technical side and have experience of using lots of different business solutions as an end user. So should therefore be able to understand the problems facing perspective customers.
I was just wondering if I was considering working for someone else again whether my previous experience would lend itself to a job in IT sales? Maybe a presales role?

Here I am - currently doing a week of presales in South Africa.
The role entails the technical side as well as the sales side.
Typically you need to learn the software, then be able to demo it and present via powerpoint. At the moment I now tend to work for start-ups, so that involves post-sales and consultancy too, with lots of troubleshooting thrown in. One day is never the same as the next and if you work for the right company you'll be mixing with the big Enterprise customers.
If you're good at the role you can go out by yourself and deal with a large amount of the commercial side too, otherwise you tend to marry up with account managers for the meetings (they just get in the way).
No cold calling or numbers though. You tend to get paid 80% flat and 20% commission or management objectives.
PM me if you need more

I've recently being thinking about exactly the same thing.
I have some sales experience and have worked in IT for a few year however I'm not sure who would take me on as all the IT sales jobs I see advertised are looking for 2 years plus experience. Obvioulsy I need to start somewhere and I'm pretty confindent I could do the job fine without the experience.
Not sure if it's worth sending my CV to you as well Ash as I'm in Glasgow, however would be more than happy to relocate for the right role.
