Audi R8 GT3

Rear-drive version of the R8 for the race track only

The Audi R8 is already one of the best sports cars on the market but how about a rear-drive version? Well, Audi has confirmed this is about to become a reality although sadly it will only be available in a new GT3 racer.

The R8 GT3 gets 500bhp-plus and will go head-to-head with Porsche and Aston Martin. First customer deliveries are expected in the next few months and the car is expected to make its competition debut in early 2009.

'Ever since the R8 was unveiled we’ve been inundated with enquiries about a race version,’ said Dr Wolfgang Ullrich, head of Audi Motorsport. ‘The R8 is the first production Audi bearing the name and genes of a successful racing sports car and is therefore an excellent base from which to build up our first big customer sport programme.'

Not yet. But this has to lay the foundation for an GT3 RS style stripped out track oriented R8. Now that would be exciting.

Personally dont belive this has came from audi at all

picture seems modified or photoshoped

never seen that watermark before on an audi pictures

plus it hasnt been announced in any way within the brand ?

may be wrong, but IMO its a mock up

doesnt mean it wont happen, but doesnt mean it will look like that

edit: the water mark im refering to is the pics going round the net and in the other thread

of course it will look photoshopped there is only so much you can prep before a photo shoot!

And how you suppose to sell a car if its not completely finished anyway!

Well, stab me vitals....

Here's me thinking the standard car was rear wheel drive. Never took much notice of it, as I think the front end looks crap..

What is it, four WD or front WD....?

It doesn't surprise me that Audi want to diversify thier racing options again. The Audi R10 is currently taking a right pasting from the 908s in in the FIA LM series.

What I wonder is whether Lamborghini will be overwhelmed if the R8 GT3 comes into the same races and starts winning? Will that be a case of VAG shooting itself in the foot?
