Just had 2 new speakers fitted to my MX-5 as the old ones had broken.

The bloke fitting them for me tells me that I've got water collecting inside the doors, the speaker pods were soaking. He couldn't work out where it was coming from and nor can I see where.

Any ideas chaps?

At least I know why my speakers were broken...

Make sure you clear out the drain holes in the underside of the doors, the rain comes in IIRC via the window seals etc, hence the drain holes.

That's great cheers, I'll give it a thorough look over on the weekend with a wire coat hanger.

The original speakers should have had plastic rain-guards to stop them getting wet.
When I fitted my after-market speakers I made up a new plastic rain-guard.

Uh oh. They removed non original speakers, someone had fitted 6.5" speakers so I had them replaced. I wonder how long they will last...

As said above, just add a rain guard.

On the original speakers, it's only a plastic shroud that runs maybe half way around the diameter of the speaker. When installed it doesn't actually sit at the top of the speaker either so is maybe not as effective as it could be.

If you just take the door card off, take the speaker out, and attach a horizontal rain rail above the speaker (maybe fashioned from the side of squarish plastic tub) you'd achieve much the same and maybe a better effect as long as it is longer than the width of the speaker.

It can angle beneath the electric window motor to drain away, then exit via your (hopefully clear now) drain holes.

I'd better get a Haynes manual.

You really don't.

Taking the doorcard off involves unscrewing 3 big screws, and one small one then popping out the clips.

Taking the speaker out involves unscrewing 3 small screws, and unclipping the connector at the rear.

It'll take you 10 minutes tops, and the same to put it back again.

I took off and completely gutted my entire door of every single component at the weekend - that was as simple as dismantling a lego house. Mx-5s really are built beautifully and logically.

Removing the doorcards on my Porsche conversely is a real pain of a job....
