There appears that a gazillion of these beasties have chosen to take up residence in one of my compost bins in the garden and I've thoroughly lost patience with them after being stung the other night.

Has anyone got any suggestions about how to get rid of the blighters. My current theory is to just dowse them in petrol and just set the bin alight, however the missus has took exception with this plan thinking that I'll reduce the whole garden to a charred mess!

Over to you guys for any solutions and any funny wasp stories/anecdotes welcome too. smile

tub or two of wasp powder from b&q is worth a try, DO IT FROM A DISTANCE THOUGH!!

When I was doing a bit of wood clearance a few years ago I used to smash about in the woods in my beefed up nissan d21 pickup, awsome fun. Until you drive directly onto a wasps nest in a rotten log, then leap out of the cab into a cloud of very very very pissed off waspies!

Was not pleasant at all.

Normally the local council offer a pest removal service.

Maybe worth a call.

Firstly they are actually useful I found out a while ago, turns out they eat lots of flies and other annoying pests!

Secondly (and this I can testify to) if you get stung a few times you stop making a song and dance about it, and it actually doesn't hurt, it does if you notice straight away and poke it and worry about it and get all cross, but for some reason if you ignore it the pain just doesn't appear, now when I get stung it registers about the same as a nettle sting.

As for killing them the best approach is just to leave them alone, if you don't wind them up they won't sting you, and they'll all be dead in a month anyway. If you must clear them for whatever reason and you can get to the nest the good old bin bag works wonders, but wear protective gear and make sure they can't get down your back through folds in clothes, in to your eyes or ears or down your bum crack. Oh and be careful what you do with the now very angry wasps nest in the bin bag. I recommend the local chav/pikey house.

My Father in law was a pest control officer for the council. His advice when we had same problem was wai until just after dusk and empty half a can of spray wasp killer into the nest then do rest of can the following evening.

Just make sure you're well covered.

My missus got stung last weekend, and her arm has only just gone done after a week of antihistamines and relief spray.

I think petrol has something to do with it. pour it onto a towl and drape it over the nest. don't light it. they suffocate due to the fumes or something ? If that doesn't work. Light it, thats far more fun.

I also got stung last week, and did like another poster suggested, taking no notice, so I assume reacting/itching the sting causes a reaction.

Johnson’s Wax do a wasp nest destroyer, which is a foam aerosol, very effective, about £4.95 from all good hardware stores.

As with most bites or stings, the more you aggrevate it the more it aggrevates you.

Years ago I lived in a little flat in Battersea with a tiny shed thing out the back. There was a teeny tiny wasp nest in there when I moved in but I didn't notice any wasps so forgot about it. Six months later the teeny tiny wasp nest was the size of a basketball and the little buzzy fkers were all over the place. Got an exterminator round - he had a big killaspray type thing with a long lance (ooer missus) attached to it. It took him longer to put on the big white space suit type thing and take it off again than it did to plunge the lance into the nest and squirt a load of white powdery stuff into it. I gave him the fifty quid, he left and over the course of the next 3 hours all the wasps crawled out and died. The only thing that was a bit of a nuisance was having to sweep all the dead wasps up again.

My neighbours were awfully grateful since their kids had been afraid of getting stung and hence hadn't been playing noisily in the back yard. I'd have left the nest alone to get even bigger if I'd known that. :/

Bow and arrow, cloth on the end dipped in Petrol, light the bad boy up and fire it right in the middle of the nest... it also helps if you paint your face in yellow and black stripes, the wasps then think you are an enemy wasp and go looking for other wasps in vengence... you could also shout FREEDOM!!! at the top of your voice for effect.

If their nest is disturbed they tend to piss off elsewhere and maek a new one so chucking a few bricks at the bin might be enough to get rid of them. Failing that, kill it with fire.

I heard vinegar or white spirit also pisses the little buggers off.

Nuking from orbit would perhaps be a tad excessive non?

yes Wasps are only a problem if you panic and flap about and go oh no it's a wasp it's a wasp ehwwrrgghwwwww let's all act like Joey Deacon. If you leave them alone they're fine.
