Statue of Liberty
Discussion
If you want to get up inside the statue; definitely pre book as pretty much impossible to walk up.
Ellis island is a must (IMHO) and we spent much more time there than at the actual SOL. We even missed the start of teh Yankees game as wanted to finish Ellis Island!!!
Oh; and if you havent been (depending on season etc) go to see the Yankees.

I went recently.
If you want to go to the top I think you have to pre book, or be the first there.
However, I didnt want to waste my time at the statue of liberty, but was pressured into going by her indoors. I apologised later, as it was surprisingly interesting, and the boat trip gives a great view of the manhatten skyline. (even though the boat does feel like its going to tip over!!)

They're knocking the stadium down this winter, so if you do get an opportunity to visit one of the oldest grounds in the game, you only got 6 weeks left (unless they make the play offs, which i doubt)
The only way to get to the top of Liberty is to prebook/be on one of the first tours of the day - well in '05 that was the case. Ellis Island is well worth the effort.
As is The Intrepid, Ground Zero (awe factor) Empire State etc
You cannot go to the top anymore , for security reasons
You can only go as high as her feet/the top of the pedastal. Lines are long and there is security in place for the island.
If you want to see it, consider getting the staten island ferry, which is free, with no waiting about or standing in line, and goes right past liberty.

I spent nearly six years in the states and never went to see a game of football or Baseball

That's what me and the missus did. The queues to get across to the island were mahoosive, you can't get up the statue anyway, and the commuter ferry is free. Bit boring at the other end though, unless you fancy a McDonalds, but if you're quick you can just walk off the boat, round the terminal and get back on the boat for the return leg.bull996 said:
Yes you can. It used to be closed for security, but they re-opened it again.
No you cannot. You can go up to her feet, which is the top of the pedastal where this an observation deck. From there you can look up into the structire- they have a glass ceiling so you can see above up into the statue
You CANNOT go up any higher than this.
Ps- I live in NYC... if it had changed and you could go up to the crown, I would be down there like a shot- something ive always wanted to do.

YES YOU CAN.Quote from website
"The Promenade and Observatory were reopened to visitors beginning August 3, 2004 by reserved ticket only"
, cool your jets. I was there in April and you couldn't. The reason? There are a few thousand passes (3?) available each day, that need to be pre-booked. No pass, no getting in, unless you get there at sparrow fart AND they haven't got rid of all the passes AND you're at the front of the queue. The statue IS closed, but access to the pedestal is open.Trommel said:
You're not missing much in any case. When I went you got as far as the crown, I think the beacon had been closed for some time before that.
I went to the crown in 2001, quite a steep staircase if I recall! But can't imagine anyone having access to the beacon apart from maintenance (you would virtually have to crawl to get to it).

The torch has been closed to the public since 1916 apparently. It has a viewing platform. But can't imagine anyone having access to the beacon apart from maintenance (you would virtually have to crawl to get to it).
