Interesting; a report commissioned by the WHO appears to endorse a particular political model; basically, the interventionist, tax and spend model, with high levels of public spending, generous welfare benefits and reinforced state control of tobacco, alcohol, personal mobility, etc. Oh, and higher levels of wealth transfer from developed countries to developing countries. It's advocating a pretty left-of-centre approach to how to run a country.

I thought organisations like the WHO were meant not to be partisan in these matters?

New Scientist coverage here. Original report here. In the spirit of the report, I feel obliged to warn that you that reading it may lead to injurious generation of steam in the bladder regions.

Given the purpose of the organisation, it's recommendations are not exactly surprising. The world we live in is rather more complex and global health equality is not the primary agenda for most people.

yes

At the South Africa climate beanfeast a few years ago, in the Michael-Five-Homes-Socialist-WTF-Meacher era, the developed nations had a choice of paying tens of trillions of dollars on futile gloopal wombling Kyoto ecoboolox or, for approx the same massive sum, providing clean drinking water for those that lack it. Naturally the feckwits chose Kyoto, absolutely the most utterly pointless of pointless massively expensive lefty gesture politics.

The WHO are deep into gloopal wombling glandularism too, somebody should have a word about mixed messages.
