Alistair Darling said:
We've got to rediscover that zeal which won three elections, and that is a huge problem for us at the moment. People are pissed off with us.

"We really have to make our minds up; are we ready to try and persuade this country to support us for another term? Because the next 12 months are critical. It's still there to play for."
Question is, can they rediscover that 'zeal'? Surely they are, to put it bluntly, fked when it comes to the next election - with or without Gordon Brown as PM?

im supprised he has not made voting compulsary and tax people for doing it!!! of course there would be only one box to tick and there would be a green tax on the paper used. For using the ballot box there would be a green tax as it would not have a good carbon footprint...

They need cab ministers that are the same calibur as the lot they had in 1997. The current lot are a bunch of medicore chancers that don't seem to be up to the job.

It doesn't matter what they say or what they do, the next election is a done deal. What they desperately need to think about is the amount of damage they'll suffer, 'cos if the UK goes back to being a one party state for 18 years again, we're fked.

They ought to get rid of Brown right now. Foisting a PM on us without so much as a by your leave is going to be shown as a total disaster.

Why if politicians were more open and felt able to use honest language instead of speaking everything in double speak then maybe we might be in a better place.

Also you know what he means, i know what he means and everyone else knows what he means so what exactly is the problem. This media driven bks where everyone is outraged that he might of used a rude word is stupid.

I think the world would be a better place is politician occasionally said "fk off" instead of some media friendly offend no one watered down double speak bks

10/10 for stating the bleeding obvious Darling, well done, have a fking biscuit.

The rumours are that the knives are being sharpened for the Party conference. Also, Darling is just Brown's sock puppet as Chancellor and I think Darling is just mightily fecked off being the fall guy.

Isn't it funny? Just like history repeating itself with the Major Government.

In place of Lamont, now insert Darling.

We were pretty much a one party state for 8 years between 1997 and 2005.

That's correct so they can hardly foist two........... If they choose to jettison the Manse Moron they will have to call an election straight after. Turkeys don't vote for Christmas and my guess is they will soldier on with him in the hope that things improve or that the Tories start to implode.

Difference is that Lamont did a hell of a lot to limit the effects of the last major downturn, only his hands were limited by the ERM. Lamont then Clarke but the economy right so much so, it was purring like a kitten in 94-97.

This time, there is no reserves of cash, gold to sell, just access to more debt. Completely different and not at all good.

Whereas the Tories had the balls to cut public spending when times got tough, this shower of st haven't.

So pass the Vaz, we're going to get shafted to pay for it.

Before the last election T Bliar publicly stated he would stand down during the following term in office. Anyone with half a brain (which may or may not include you) knew full well that G Clown would be taking over. Which hardly constitutes a "foisting without so much as a by your leave". They might as well have put it in the manifesto. So I don't understand your point?

And what do you mean by one party state? Only one party in power at a time presumably? Apart from a short coallition in the 30's and the Lib/Lab pact in the 70's, both disasterous BTW, the UK has always been a "one party state" and Labour have been it for the past eleven. The reason for this was the opposition being totally unpalatable to the electorate; Labour tearing it's own heart out in the 80's and the tories recently. That is hardly the fault of the party in power is it? So I don't really understand the point you're trying to make. Again.

Couldn't agree more about open honesty but I would like to think that our elected representatives are well enough educated to be able to express themselves effectively and honestly without resort to language that might be found offensive by some, especially when there are perfectly suitable synonyms that aren't from the dictionary according to Viz. The apparent unwillingness or inability of anybody with the public ear to actually tell the unvarnished truth is somewhat depressing. I have no way of knowing if you have young children - mine are no longer of school age - but they pick up Anglo-Saxon expletives quite quickly enough without hearing them every half-hour on the News and even from the lips of the government's ministers. Make no mistake, I am no shrinking violet when it comes to the use of expletives, but I try to temper my language according to the nature of the audience; it's simple respect for others.
