Thinking of proposing to the missus (of 5 years, so probably about time), but... don't know her ring size, and she doesn't actually own any for me to steal and measure.

So I was thinking just buy a cheapo ring at a guestimate size to propose with, and then go shopping for the good one after?

Question is, is this a stupid idea that will go down like a sack of st thrown off a cliff?

No, good idea. Or - take her out and buy a friendship type ring - something like that. You'll find the size out that way. Possible difficult if she's not into jewellery though.

yes Make sure that it is easy for her to spot that it is an "El Cheapo", otherwise she could be left wondering if it is the real thing.

Edited to add, Claires Accessories, Mikey or Debehamns should have something suitable.

A decent ring shop will do two things:

1. Be alble to guess based on her height and weight a ring size
2. Change the size FOC if you get it wrong.

Go for L and hope for the best. She won't care if it fits or not, she'll be pleased anyway.

Good point - I was having a debate about whether it should actually be a good temporary ring, but I think defo temporary is a better approach. Not minging or anything, just clearly not the real thing :P

I would (and did) go with the real McCoy - she will be showing it off to her friends etc which a cheapo won't permit.

Ask her to give you a prostate exam. Then with the experience fresh in your mind go to the jeweller and ask him to let you borrow one of these;

Insert until you sense familiarity and Bob's your uncle.

just dont do what "my" mate did when buying a bra set for his mrs, point to random girl and "said about that size" ! ( the idea of checking the size didn't come in to it)

Cant you borrow one of her rings, it's what I did, she lost the ring for a few hours (didn't even notice).

You don't have to have a ring when you propose! Take her shopping that day/next morning for one?

Or chose one & find out from thhe shop how long it will take to resize it. 'Casue she will want to be wearing it ASAP!

ETA - good luck thumbup

Ahh,

See I did the proper thing and asked her dad before i did, I also then asked her mum what her ring size was - after I had her fathers permission.

Another vote for buy the proper ring and propose with it....any decent jeweller will change it, resize it or even give you your cash back if she says no.

I considered doing the cheap thing and then going to buy the real one but was seriously advised against it by several girlfriends.

The result was that Mrs M said that she wouldn't even think of changing it.

Dont bother buying one before. Sure she will be thrilled to get the ring straight away but I'm sure she would be even more thrilled with being able to chose her own ring.

You probably dont know what she would like quite as well as you think you do :P

Use the Puggit method...

Propose outside the jewellers (admittedly it was Tiffanys in 5th Avenue...)
