Everytime I go into a supermarket at the moment I seem to be whincing at the checkout, have prices really gone up by that much or is it just a sub-conscious reaction because all we hear is negativity in the press etc?

Due to only living in the 'real world' for the past 8 months or so (previously I lived on a RAF station) I never really paid much attention to how much everyday items cost, I sure am now tho!

In spite of the 4 point something official figure there were before-and-after figures for typical foods and petrol over the last year published this week that (iirc) showed 26% and 29% increases.

ETA found an article or two and got some numbers for food (basket of 24 items) as at April:

Also bread 16% and cheese / eggs 19% more recently

I generally don't tend to notice things but I did see that krackawheat (biscuits for cheese) have gone from about 60p to 80p overnight at Tesco.

Yes, everything does seem very expensive right now. Although I was over the moon at my last quarterly gas bill, based on a reading = £0.87
