Im wanting to replace the standard steering wheel on my 2000 mpi cooper for something a bit nicer eg a mountney alloy one or something. It has an airbag fitted. Can i just take the existing steering wheel off or is it a bit more involved than that ? I dont want the airbag going off in my face !! Thanks in advance

You need to disconnect the battery (both leads) then leave overnight. Remove the two "star headed" allen screws securing the air bag then lift the bag off and disconnect the lead. Treat the air bag with respect (don't drop it) and store it somewhere safe. It is now possible to remove the steering wheel. I'm not sure how you will get the horn to function on a non standard wheel.

It might be worth contacting your insurance company and asking their opinion on it, I know some won't cover you if the airbag is removed.
