I can't believe it isn't doing it anyway. Any Exige I've ever heard has been even better at popping and banging that my Sport 160. You do realise that overfueling is a [i[bad[/i] thing in this case though, and you should actually be happy? hehe

fit an aftermarket ECU like an Emerald and dont enable the fuel cut off on overrun, that will do it

A small air leak introduced just after the exhaust manifold usually works (allows air in on overrun to help ignite any unburned fuel) biglaugh

yes i understand that running it lean is bad and running it rich isnt. i did think about a small air leak but wasnt sure that this would do lasting damage. would it be an idea to turn off the fuel cut off on overrun. or any other ideas

Have you got an emerald? you can't turn the fuel-cut off on the Lotus ECUs.

Are you running a Cat? decatting makes the car pop a lot more than with one in.

In the end, the odd pop and bang is ok, but making it do it all the time is sure sign that your car's running too rich and you're probably getting bore-wash... say hello to rebuild intervals and new liners every few thousand miles.

I think if you're running the 177ECU it's a much more conservative map than the 192 ECU, that could have something to do with it. My 192 pops and bangs a little bit and when it's nice and hot it'll spit flame and boom like a howitzer. If it's not a 192 spec car then it probably will be a fair bit more civilised.

i have been offered the 192 ecu. do you think that i should fit this. as i understand its more generous witht the fueelling.are there any consequences of fitting this ecu will anything need to be changed on the car

only fit the 192 ECU if you've got the 192 intake pulley as well... it'll work without, but it won't run as well as it should.

Just use a very lightly trailing throttle when it's hot, and get a louder exhaust.

Having just fitted a 177 spec VHPD into the Exige (hgf after 60k mles on original 190bhp VHPD)- I can confirm there is no problem with this combination - intend installing a pair of Piper verniers to generally improve the engine performance

so its fine to change the ecu to the 190 version and not ahve toreplace or change anything else? that way its just a little more generous with the fuelling

The 190 upgrade was IIRC a bit of a fallacy (please correct me if I'm wrong) - This 'upgrade' was offered by Lotus to circumnavigate inherent fuel mapping problems contained within the 177 ecu - ie let the customers pay for the development..

Wrong.... the engine was always intended as a 192 but they couldn't get it fuelling right to pass the relevant emissions tests to gain SVA. Hence they had to offer the 192 kit as an aftermarket "dealer fit" so that it wasn't being offered with the car as new.

its like this - popping and banging is generally the sign of a poorly managed engine...most good places when mapping a car for you will try not to have it making all that noise wink

So yea, youre going to have to spend some cash on an aftermarket ECU really - at least you can get some benefits - get some vernier pulleys at the same time...see www.dvapower.com get the verniers, ECU, then get it timed properly and a good map....it will run a lot better and you can have the fireworks too wink

I don't think that is correct actually - problems were found with the 177 ecu on the 340r (introduced well before the Exige) - too much unused fuel resulting in a number of fires..so a fix had to be found.. btw its arguable that the 'fix' actually increased the bhp of the VHPD..

Its my understanding that SVA only applies to 50 units or less produced? - so S1 Exige was not SVA?
