Any experts out there?

Just picked this up today and there are a few little niggles I would like to get cleared up. Mainly the display bit at the top of the screen, (battery level indicator, Signal strength bit etc.)

Next to the signal indicator there is a little blue "H" sybol that keeps appearing. What the hell is this for?

And next to that, there is an internet like symbol of a blue and green earth which is showing up even when i'm not using the internet??

There is another little thing that is confusing me, the price plan I'm on includes free use of Windows Live Messenger, but when I sign into it from the phone it doesn't show any of my contacts as online..

Any help is appreciated!

TIA

Do a software upgrade on it as soon as you can, it helped mine which was turning itself off for no reason and not doing things it should have done, like the alarm going off, made me late for work twice! Been fine since though.

The H is the faster internet connection, only available in certain parts of the UK, not national coverage yet, but better than GPRS apparantly. The world symbol is that it's online, but mine comes on if I'm receiving a picture message, or sending one too.

Which provider are you with?

HSDPA, 3.6Mbps 3G network on that phone.

In the box the phone came in, install the software on the cd and there's an application that connects you to Sony Ericsson's website and searches for one automatically. As long as you've got the phone connected to the computer via the cable too. wink

ETA: Just make sure anything you've put on the phone already today, like contacts or images are backed up as you'll lose them during the upgrade.

I was thinking of getting one of these phones, they look nice and slim and have quite a few features. Apart from the above, are they generally ok as phones go?

i love mine apart from the niggles.

Very slim, works well, camera is good and looks a million times better than the N95.

The only thing is, a 8MP Sony C905 is coming soon.....

Telecomms pedant.. Yes, it's HSDPA, and anything from 1.8Mbps to 7.2Mbps depending on what the network and handset supports. I'd guess the C902 is a Cat 6 device, so maximum of 3.6mbps. You'll never see that much in real life, but it should be good enough.

The world thing is probably a PDP attached indication. Don't worry about it.

I often wonder why the manufacturers bother putting this sort of thing on a phone. It's not as if the user can do much about it. Just have a "I'm doing something" icon and leave it at that.

Installed all the stuff off the CD earlier and did the updates, seems to be working fine now.

...Apart from the fecking external speaker, which earlier today decided it would pack in! rage

Going back down to the shop with it tomorrow and will be expecting a replacement/repair!

I know, I know, I know!!

The little globe icon means that it knows where you are - when you take a picture it will be tagged with your location.

No, it means it's accessing the internet as with all SE phones

Not one of the SE firmware updates I've done has cleared out the contacts/calendar entries, and thats on a few phones - W550, W810, K800.

Ummm not so sure about mine frown

I've had sony phone for years now but the C902 has done the alarm not going off trick on me too.

Also its too slippery and I hate the keys.

I'll do the software upgrade, hope that speeds things up a bit too.
