I'd try Modwise hot start kit first and make sure you're earth's are good nick from engine to chassis. My experience of overhauling them is they only last a little lonnger nd has been a false econmy for me, but others may have diff experiences.

Hi Thanks already done the earth thing when i had a dodgy battery got new battery and all other checks out ok! the starter has been gradually declining for a while now and it isnt getting used enough so im sure it just wants cleaning up on solenoid side.!

I had the "hot starter motor syndrome" a couple of years ago. Removed & stripped starter and found signs of binding between the pull-in solenoid armature and coil. Using a suitably sized 'flap-wheel' sander I took about 1-2 thou out of the coil and the same from the armature. Don't take any more off as this effects the solenoid air-gap and hence the pull-in power!
Starter was re-fitted with a nice, shiny (and bloody expensive!) heat shield blanket and has behaved perfectly ever since.
Note - if the starter coil starts to bind, through heat expansion, it doesn't matter what voltage you have at the coil...... (I've worked on vehicle electrical systems for 40 years...)
Hope this helps
Chris

Hi thanks for the tips! finally git round to it and did what i would say a good clean armature etc but did a quick test in rotor and wasnt sure of results bible doesnt cover that much detail but it didnt seem good althogh it didnt look too bad or damaged. However solenoid clicks in ver well now but no signs of turning over the brushes looked fine and re bedded in i guess it is the windings shot which is what the resistance tests seemed to point to. Where is best place to get new exchange one? Im in South yorkshire. I know they are high torque but are they specific to TVR or is it a Rover variant? Cheers richard
