Just been speaking with my mother about a problem she is having with Royal Mail regarding her dog.

She has had the dog a few years but due to him being her first dog she hasn’t made a very good job of bringing him up and pampered him too much, consequently the dog now believes he is the pack leader and to go with that he has developed a serious hatred of the post man going nuts every time he comes to the door.

To try to prevent this my mum tried getting the dog used to the guy by every day when he came she would go out, get the dog to sit and the postman would give him a biscuit and stroke him etc and all was fine until one day he got over excited and ran at the post man and jumped at him, now the dog is only small a patterdale terrier and merely bounced off my mum got hold of him and apologised profusely to the postman who has ok about it, the postman has then gone back to work and reported he had been bitten by the dog and from this my mum has received numerous solicitors letters attempting to obtain details of her home insurance to make a claim even though no evidence of a bite has ever been shown to us and certainly at the time the postman made no such claims of a bite to my mum.

Since this happened my mum had a post box fitted to the wall to save the dog going mad when he sees the guy coming, unfortunately a few months later my sister allowed the dog to escape and he ran up to the postman (a different guy to before) and started running round him in circles barking, the postman reacted by going crazy at the dog (I was at my mother’s at the time so saw all of this) booting him in the face a good few times so I ran out and grabbed the dog obviously the guy wasn’t happy but I don’t feel the force he used was necessary certainly the dog spent the rest of the day being sick with stress, but still they don’t get paid to deal with dogs so I understand my mother is at fault for not having her dog under control.

Because of this RM stopped deliveries to my mother’s house (fair enough) but what he don’t understand is that they are withholding the mail completely, she went to the local sorting office to try to collect her mail and they are point blank refusing to give it to her, they won’t allow her to collect from either the local post office or the main sorting office and say they will not release and mail until the 2 biting complaints have been sorted both of which never happened, yes the dog barked and ran round the guys but not once did he bite??

Does anyone know if they are allowed to do this as there is quite a lot of important mail she needs to get (new debit card, hospital appointments etc), refusing to deliver is fair enough but not allowing her to collect the mail at all seems strange??

that's plain stupid.
it won't be getting resolved very quick if you can't get the letters off the solicitors

The dog is never out, this has happened twice in 6 years so not really a common occurance although i agree that it shouldnt happen at all and completly understand the decision to refuse delivery.

It does seem strange, they don't own the mail, they are just contracted to deliver it. So failing to do so would appear to be illegal but I'm not an expert, they may be something that allows them to do it.

I must admit, one thing that makes me furious is peoples dog attacking me, or going through the motions of attacking. Just because a dog runs around you barking doesn't put you at ease, knowing it could easily dart in and put a hole in your leg. I too would likely kick the holy out of any dog that acted like this one, regardless of the size of the thing. It might just teach it a lesson?

And seeing as it has happened to two postmen I can see their point of view. But asking for her insurance details looks like they're simply in a money chasing mood.

Tell her to speak to her insurance people, as she may have some sort of legal coverage? Or simply give the insurance details to the RM, and let it go from there? I'm sure the house insurance people will not just hand over money without some sort of evidence, photographs, doctors report about the alleged bites.

The postmen sound like sodding wimps, I had a stint of being a postman during summer holidays from university and was rushed upon by some nutty dogs, not a big deal.

Join the club I have had first class letters take over a week.

I get a lot of post sent to my house, as work based there. Sometimes I don't get some or a few days.

It annoys the hell out of me.

I'm guessing they are just money chasing.

Take the dog down the sorting office and threaten to unleash it on soft jessies unless they hand over your mail...

If that fails, jump the counter and bite their ankles...

Fill your mouth with foam first, mutter rabies and growl a lot...

I may be talking out of my arse but the letters are your mum's property and someone has already paid RM to deliver them. Refusing to allow her to personally collect them (providing she has i.d.) seems a bit, well, wrong.

Have you tried speaking to the local delivery office manager? Give them a ring first thing in the morning, explain the situation including the erection (ooo er!) of the post box. If that doesn't work try the local "area manager" type. An apology might smooth things out too, even if you don't feel like it's owed.

I deal with RM on a daily basis, the local managers are generally just experienced posties and get there through hard work.

I was under the impression that anything sent via Royal Mail was the property of the Queen. Sounds bizarre I know - I read it in a case where a postman stole some mail and he was charged with stealing from the Queen. Anyway, I digress, I don't think Royal Mail have any right whatsoever to withold your mail. If the postmen had been bitten, one would assume they had to have a tetanus injection or indeed a course of anti biotics. Is there any evidence of this? Any photos of the dog bite?

Kicking the dog could be seen as cruelty. I don't know the facts but, I would make contact to the RSPCA with regard to your postman cruely kicking your small dog.

With holding your mail is bang out of order but i would kick the dog if it was doing the same to me, i'm a courier and have been bitten by a dog that was seemingly nice and doing the usualy darting around and barking.

In your position, I would make it clear to the PO manager that I would sue him personally for any financial loss that might arise as a result of mail witheld by him.

Well she spoke to the PO manager today and apparently he was quite nice about it and had no knowledge of her post being withheld, he is going to find out whats going on today and get back to her.

Our dog nearly jumps through the door when the postman comes. We just give the postie a nice bottle of wine every christmas and it seems to keep him happy smile

Why don't dog owners just train their dogs not to attack postmen, surely it cannot be that hard?
