I feel like an ass even asking...

So, I smacked a pothole hard enough to dent my beloved Kinesis rim and I need to ship it back for refurbishing. So my idiot question of the day is, if I go buy a floor jack, where do I place it so I don't damage the underbody? Also, car will be on jackstands while the wheel is off...how should I space them and where?

Shaemfully, Mike

Mike...

There are four "jackpoints" underneath the car. You should be able to spot them as they have a notch. I believe that the tranny is also a jackpoint, but don't quote me on that. I will have a rummage through my service manual when I get home. I think I have a TIFF file that I can send you (I scanned the page in so that I can give it to the yokels when they put tires on...)

Mike,

The jackpoints are underneath the side skirts just behind the front wheelwells and just in front of the rear wheelwells. It's usually best to put a block of wood (2x4 or 2x6) between the top of the jackstand and the fiberglass.

You can also jack the rear end under the chassis hoop below the tranny.

Hope that helps.

Sorry to hear about your rim. There is a kinda 4" groove where the edge of the jack goes into. The jack head (use the Lotus supplied jack) goes onto that hard part, not the rocker panel in front of it. If you hear fiberglass cracking, stop! If not, you will put a hole in the bottom of the car. (Don't ask).

Instead of leaving the car jacked up, you could put the donut on it.

When you refer to floor jack, if it is a hydralic type I put a hockey puck in the cup of the jack.

I go the frame where the T connected to the backbone for the front.

In the rear I use the transmission cradle. Do not jack up using the tranny it self.

Once the wheel is off put the jack stand under the disc rotor and lower it on the stand.

There are metal plates for the OEM jack behind the fronts wells and in front of the rear wells but that is not what I think you meant when you mentioned floor jack.
