On the ITV news in the minute: The first time it has been clear of ice in history. Isn't there a news article saying it was clear in the early 1900s? If so, I might have to post it off.

Google Roald Amundsen. He navigated it in about 1905.

A seismic survey ship from my company sailed through it a couple of years back. It is clear every year for a certain period.

There is more than one route to take on the Northwest Passage

Franklin took the southern route but it took him into stationary pack ice and a reducing width of water didn't help.

I wonder if anyone told them there have been periods of no ice caps at all. Suspect the NWP was clear of ice then.

Should have checked his GPS then.

Took him 3 years 1903-1906 - not is wasn't ice free! They spent 2 winters frozen in. The only reason that the Gjoa, the ship (loose desciption, it was 48 tons) used made it was that it was small and had a shallow draught so was able to go inshore to places that other ships couldn't make.

One of the main conclusions of the Gjoa expedition was that the NW passage was not passable to shipping.

It is both the NW and NE passages that are open, for the first time in human history.
