S Type R collected
Discussion
Hi all,
Well I collected my new S Type R on Saturday.
I have done about 65 miles and used half a tank of fuel (cannot resist the kickdown).
Feels great to drive, solid as a rock, quick, responsive and has toys galore (electric headrests were a nice surprise) .... CONSIDERABLY better (IMO) than the 98 XJR I have been driving for the last 10 months.
The XJR was more 'wallowy' (graceful I suppose you could argue) ... this is taught and far more a drivers car, but also much smoother and has no creaks, bangs etc despite 70k miles - feels like 20k.
I haven't even wanted to drive the 911 all weekend, and keep walking past it to get to the Jag !! (This never happened with the old XJR).
Anyone who is reading this, contemplating whether an STR will do it for them, my advice is to go for it. I think the car is better now, having gotten a LITTLE used to it, than on the 4-5 test drives.
I am off to Sunderland tomorrow, which usually takes 3.5 to 4 hrs, so I will have plenty of time to get to know the car on a long motorway run.
More detail on the car's spec (and pics) can be found on previous thread "S Type R Buying Advice". It has Full s/s Sports exhaust system inc race cats, upgraded supercharger pulley, lowered, ecu remap etc.
Anyone contemplating these mods - cannot recommend them enough, this car is seriously quick and I think it would genuinely give the 996tt a good run for its money.
I tried to capture the sound on a video which I have added to youtube!
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=kS8pZuzc6X0
This mini-video does not capture the sound anywhere near what it is actually like, and I didn't want to rev it hard as we currently get on with the neighbours, but it was worth a try. Will add another one soon, now I know how to do it.
Many thanks to everyone who helped and gave advice ... VERY HAPPY INDEED!!

Glad to hear you are happy with the S-Type.
Looks like you have bought an excellent car there, and hope that you continue to enjoy it!
I am really pleased with ours so far, looks good, great to drive, very quick and also very practical!!
Regards,
Scott
(The only downside - It's cheaper to insure than the XKR, so now my wife is also on the policy to drive it.............

Zanderman: Same boat as me really in respect of 911. I am fortunate enough to have both at the minute, but can't really see why I would need/want to keeo the Porsche. As I have had her for nearly 4 yrs I will wait a while and se if the 'honeymoon period' with the Jag finishes abruptly, but don't see why it should.
Think I am likely to chop Porsche in for a TVR or fezza .... something a bit special and to make the weekend thrash an event.
I've driven up to Sunderland today (200miles) and thoroughly enjoyed it, and I got 29.8pmg !!!
Did the same journey in my turbo last week and it was uneventful.
The Porsche is great, don't get me wrong and there's something about driving that car, but there's not that much difference and for me, with an 18month old little girl, I'll get far more use out of the Jag.
Considering power, luxury, toys etc for the money, you can't go wrong in my view.
Scottman: I added my Mrs to the Porsche last year and my premium dropped by a staggering £300 - couln't believe it.
Needless to say, she also is a named driver on the STR ... only problem is; she is happier to drive the Jag and wants to, rather than being forced into driving the 911 when we got to the pub and I developed 'a taste for it' ha ha

Good to hear that you are happy with the car. I think they are superb. I've had my 2005my STR (quartz/black, with all the toys) over 2 years and like it so much I decided to keep it and have extended the warranty out to late 2010.
The only shortcomings are that the STR really needs an LSD and a quicker steering rack.
What tyres does yours have, and what do you think of them?
We're not spoilt for choice, as many tyres that are the right size have insufficient load rating, and the tyre manufacturer won't accept liability if you have any problems.
Mine came with Conti Sports (the original equpiment tyre, not Cont Sport 2's or 3's). I was unimpressed, especially in the wet.
When the Contis wore out I fitted Falken FK452's. They are ok in the wet, but worse in the dry!
An LSD would help a lot (but so would decent tyres!).

the car has a full new set of conti sport 2's which seem ok, but l haven't had much opportunity to put them to good use given our british weather.
Personally I like Pirelli tyres. had bridgestones, and toyo proxes on my tuscan, had Pirelli on the 911 but then changed the to pilot sports after being recommended to. good tyres in respect of performance, road noise, but wear very quickly. just had to replace the bald rears after 7k miles! (would have had Pirelli fitted, but fronts were ok, and imo a car should have 4 matching tyres).
can't really comment on the str as only had it a week and only done 500 miles so far.
Got back from sunderland yesterday, incredibly quickly. very smooth to cruise in, infinite power when i rarely wanted to change lanes, very low road noise, solid as a rock, and 'i'd guess' that short bursts up to 130 would be just as solid. very very impressed with the overall car.
I personally don't find the cabin small, my old xjr felt a little bigger, but it was ivory interior where this is black and imo there are more places to put things in the str.
At the prices that some of these cars are going at, you simply cannot go far wrong.
mine has 73k on it now, and feels like it has 20k, so don't be put off by higher miles if you find the right car, with good history and money spent on it.
Not had chance to take my own pics yet, but will at weekend. dealer pics can be found on previous thread S TYPE R BUYING ADVICE.

The mods that had been done were the governing factor in me going for this particular car. Fell in love with the sound and there was no way I was not going to buy it.
I was working out what it would cost to get a car to the same spec on paramounts website ... worth every penny, but made it seem a 'no brainer'.
Will try to record another sound clip, and take some pics ... if/when it finally stops raining. I have never heard any Jag sound like it .... sounds WAY WAY WAY better than my 911 Turbo.
I realised this morning that there is not much point in me keeping it.

Sorry Guys, I'm just not getting this.I was working out what it would cost to get a car to the same spec on paramounts website ... worth every penny, but made it seem a 'no brainer'.

I love Jaguar, especially the R cars and I've never been one to be at all negative about someone's new choice of wheels.
But.............STR better than a 996TT ?
Please don't get me wrong, its not a 'negative energy' post, but I'm genuinely confused

Have racked up 35,000 miles in a year in my 02 STR and experienced no real probs other than the air bag light flashing, a telemetry problem, and a bulb here and there but all easily sorted.
I must say this is the best car i have ever owned, before i was using a 525i for motorway work and a chim 500 for fun but the running of the 2 was too much to cope with, the jag really is managable even with my high miles.
I'm currently running conti's which am more that happy with although i dont think they are the original manufacturers spec, i have previously used pirrelli's, i would steer clear of the Rosso's though which needed replacing after no more than 6000 miles although i think that was down to some fun down the track - oops.
Am currently looking to sell the STR and more than likely replace with another although am now thinking about a late XKR after watching an old re-run of top gear with the XKR down at pendine sands?
Will i regret it?

Nope. I went and bought my Jag Racing Green XKR after watching that episode (see my profile.) With a late 4.2ltr XKR it will be more reliable than the STR.Will i regret it?
