I am looking for some understanding about what goes through the heads of people when they basically 'mess up the place' for others. I don't want the usual rants about ignorant chavs, but some real insight as to what is goung through their heads;

I live in a pretty village of about 100 houses. Each year we have a village collection, hold BBQs, carol singing, bonfire party etc to raise enough money to keeop the place looking nice; hanging baskets, benches for walkers, cutting back overgrown hedges, wildlife signing etc.

What we get back in return is people;

steal the baskets and flower tubs and any new planting

they throw bottles, cans and take-away cartons out of car windows

they stop to have a dump/throw up over the churchyard wall

they rip out the wildlife signs put up for birdwatchers and walkers

they dump the contents of their boots and ashtrays wherever they stop

they use the church car park to fornicate and drink and leave their spent condoms/cans/vomit/urine in a pile outisde the gates

they reverse into the railings and flower beds for fun in drunkeness, smashing walls and railings that have been there for hundreds of years

they drop piles of litter right next to the large new litter bin we installed for them

they 'do-nut' on the carpark tearing up the surface so that when it rains the surafce washed away

they light fires under trees that have been there for 100 years

So what is it in the brain that says "I know, let's just mess the place up for no reason so that in the morning some poor sod who gives a monkies will clear it all up after me because I can't be bothered to stop at the bin and pop my rubbish in there?"

AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

I don't know, I don't understand the mentality.

What I do know is that when found, a month spent in the public square with daily floggings would reduce the numer of incidents of such wanton vandalism.

I've mentioned this before but it's an example of being proactive against these pond scum individuals.

A friend of mine lived on a road where the rubbish collection was done by leaving your black binbag out on the path. The problem was that someone was driving down and hitting lots of these bags and the rubbish was going everywhere, it was disgusting and made the place look like a tip.

So, one morning there was a massive bang, a screech of tyres and then silence. They found a car with the front end stoved in and a person sat in it in a bit of a daze. A kind resident had decided to leave his enormous concrete ball out for the binmen to catch the little git.

So, not the most sensible thing to do but it worked marvelously.

You obviously live in a village which a lot of people care about so why not make a point of approaching these idiots on mass and dealing with it yourselves?

Unfortunately a lot of people simply do not have the presence of mind to consider the point and impact of their actions.

These same people also lack sufficient development of mind and intellect to seek entertainment in more acceptable ways.... basically they rely on primeval thrills for entertainment i.e. destruction and outrage !!

I hate anti-social behaviour in all its forms, and I also don't know what the cure is.

It may be that taking very strong action in a couple of cases would encourage the others.

By very strong action, I'm thinking something like one of those Barrett rifles, the ones with the .5 calibre ammunition.

After a couple of these AS people had been shot with something like that, the media could be relied upon to let everybody know and the problem would go away. There would need to be the occasional reminder, of course.

As you seem to be an organised village, get the parish council to complain to the Police and the Local Authority and ask them what they intend to do about it. Get your MP involved.

Worked for us.

I think it's a major part of the human condition to feel that we affect the world around us. To feel that something is different because we were there. Luckily for most of us I hope, we were given the right kind of guidance either through decent parenting or life in general, we have learned to affect the world in a positive (or at least non-destructive) way, and choose to, despite in many cases it being more difficult.

I think these kids have not got that instilled in them, but still want to have an affect on the world, and therefore take the easy option of destruction, stealing, etc. Instead of creating and helping.

Well that's my take on it.

It is the lack of response to their actions, As a kid every park had a keeper who was god, thye kep everyone in check and as a result vandalisum was minimal and shocking when it happened.
I now live wuth a lake in the front of my house where public fish. Those same fishermen leave beer bottles bait bags dump in the hedge bottom etc making the site they visit worse every day.
As a local we go and clear up as the council has sub contracted the park to the invisible man and his team.
When councils and locals take pride, and the police take no st from minor offenders then we will get back some of the amenities these scum spoil for the rest of us.

I think it's something to do with this 'I don't care' or I can do what I want' attitude, everyone thinks they are important and if they see something that takes that attention away from them they don't like it.
Political correctness has gone a long way to empowering those of us with little intelligence or character to the extent that they feel able to react against things in the basest of ways with impunity.
It goes someway to explain road rage too, these people feel everyone should give way to them, they are more important now, people like them are famous now, famous on BB or as football players, instantly rich without effort or talent, anything that shows any sign of intelligence, talent or selflessness is seen as either a threat or a weakness.

Bit of a ramble that, sorry

I would say that it is down to a very small minority in your village. It can't be that hard to find out who this is all being caused by....

The council (or whoever owns the fishing rights) should offer the lake to a fishing club, for a nominal rent. Club waters are usually much cleaner than public ones, because all clubs will ban people for littering and have bailiffs to enforce the rules.

Dog st ? I don't undestand this. Why let your dog crap in the middle of a path ? I'm not even talking about people picking it up, just getting the dog to st somewhere out of the way. I realise that some dog owners are, shall we say, not kid friendly, but surely those same dog owners must occasionally tread in dog st themselves ? Surely it's in their own interest (let alone ours), that dogs crap away from the pathways ?

How difficult can it be ?

(FFS)

Once a dog's bomb bay is open, nothing is going to stop it from dropping, if you drag them away they will just leave a nice line of poops. Easier to pick up a pile! Here endeth the dog poo lesson biggrin

This is happening in the long term but the councils move at glacial speed with issues like this in our area
