Now, we all know that downloads are bad, m'kay. Do it regularly and you may be fined. You are likely to make music and film companies go purple with rage and you may even end up on the end of a leaflet campaign.

So, what is the legal position regarding downloading stuff that you already own. For instace, I have a bunch of comedy videos. The video player has just gone bang and replacing them with DVD's will be costly. Since I've already bought them legitimately, can I therefore download the ones I've bought, write them to DVD and enjoy? Surely in purchasing the videos I've already contributed and satisfied any copyright law.

Lawyers, non-lawyers, and everyone else who writes funny stuff on PH - over to you.

and do you have to keep the videos to prove that once you did actually own them?

because i have unfortunatly thrown away all my scratched CD's, I did back them up though by downloading them.

The clue is in the name.

Copyright.

Copy.

Right.

The "right" to make "copies".

"They" own that right. You don't.

WTF? I've never seen a Rammage comment that didn't include blatant sexyisms.

Thankyou.

I thought there was a "Fair use" policy in the UK that allowed you to make copies of stuff to preserve the originals - like copying CDs for use in the car so the originals don't get nicked if the car does, etc

Making a single back-up copy of something you own is legal in the UK. However, cracking/disabling any kind of copy protection is not.

So copying VHS videos which you own to DVD is ok; making copies of protected DVDs is not.

The same legal recourse is going to happen regardless of whether you have original legitimate copies or not - namely, nothing whatsoever.

Nope. You're thinking of US law. UK copyright law has no such fair use provision.
