Boring post i'm afraid but i haven't had a full nights sleep for over 12 months now and it's really pissing me off.
It all began when i started taking tablets from the doc's to wean myself off smoking as they gave me mad nightmares and restless sleep. ( Worked though thumbup)

Since i came off them it takes me at least an hour to nod off as my brain seems to be racing with random rubbish and then i wake up at least 3/4 times during the night and now i'm completly knackared.

I have spoken to my GP and he fobbed me off with the usual " Are you worried about anything" bla bla bla which i'm not everything in my life seems fine.

Has anyone on here experienced insomnia and does anyone on here have any remedies for a good nights kip non alcoholic etc

Sensible responses apprieciated

daft as it sounds.....a bedtime routine.

Mine used to be a cut off point for caffeine, exercise, warm bath and a regular time to go to bed. TV came out of the bedroom to be replaced by a book.

It worked for me. I have now replaced the exercise and warm bath with a quick wank

Try some Aloe Vera, you can get it lots of places. Its great stuff, you drink it by the way.

Go on try it.

Exercise!

Go for a long late evening walk or play a sport so you are physically unable to stay awake.

Hot chocolate or Ovaltine. Old-fashioned as it sounds, hot milky drinks do work.

Just bought some sleeping pills over the counter in South Africa - £4 for 24. To help me sleep on the flight back...

Lots of things can contribute to insomnia. Stress/diet/lack of exercise etc - the usual suspects. I always find that night nurse and small whisky sort me out for a good 8-10 hours although it doesn't promote healthy sleep!

I spent the best part of a year getting no more than 2 or 3 hours a night and it didn't bother me at all - I never felt tired during the day or suffered any ill health. One day I slept for 8 hours solid and that was me, back into the routine.

Apparently Nytol (sp?) works, at least that's what I've been recommended to try and improve on my 6 hours or less per night sleep habits. I'm finding not sleeping is a poor combination with spending 15 hours of my day on work related activities.

I dont have any remedies as of yet but I do experience the same from time to time, more often lately. Can be absolutely knackered but i'll get in bed then my brain wont switch off, like you say thinking about random, often pointless things...

I do shift work so sometimes I cant sleep cos im simply not tired (going from nights to mornings is a classic example), but not being able to sleep when your knackered is awful!

Have you tried Nytol? I tried it a while back and it made me feel really sleepy but I woke up about half hour after dropping off and felt really strange...not trippy strange (!)...hard to describe, just didnt really fell well, my breathing went a bit funny, so decided not to take it again!

I suffer the same thing, and have done for a long time.

Try and do something relaxing before you go to bed.
i.e. not telly/playstation/rally driving/sex

Reading in the bath is about the best thing I've found.

Whenever I've had this problem, which is thankfully quite rare, I read a book in bed, the trick is to put it down at the right time, which for me is the first time I read a page and can't actually remember what it said.

At that point it's light off and kip.

Used to take hours to get to sleep. Found out I react slightly to caffeine so tend to drink de-caffeinated.
I'm now usually tired enough to nod off pretty quickly at bed time, but now seem to spend a lot of time knackered during the day due to lack of stimulation. Can't win....
