Lemans alternative

Last year we went to the LM24, this year we went to the LM Classic, excellent. A few weeks ago a mate said he fancied doing something else in the foriegn so came up with the 24 hr at Zolder and we have just come back....bl**dy brill. The feel of the event in atmosphere was halfway between the classic and 24 LM,s but smaller. Very little info is available and in the whole weekend there we saw no other brits camping but it was very friendly. I must say we were blessed with excelent weather, but even without that, we would still have enjoyed it.

With three of us in a truck, including ferry, fuel, camping, entry, food and booze....about £150 a head, which we thought was pretty good

One of my favourite hoons was a last minute decision to go to the final DTM round at Hockenheim '05 when Paffett won the championship and some lad named Lewis Hamilton won the F3 Euroseries aswell. We drank with, camped with and survived hangovers with the friendliest Germans without another Brit in sight.

No tickets, nothing booked, just decided at midday Thursday, by midnight we were at Calais and by 2pm we were at the circuit.

My Le mans group didn't really enjoy it in 2007 so this year we decided to try something different and did the Nurburgring 24Hrs. Highly recommended

Yes Redwing - went to a round of the French GT championship at Dijon-Prenois a week before LM about 10 or 12 years ago - quite good, go down to the hairpin (I think you have to be on the inside of the circuit), or on the inside of the circuit by the fast sweeps just before the track forks for the harpin or the shortcut when it's not being used.
Camped in the municipal campsite in Dijon itself (I think) - good as well, large & clean site, but most camping municipals are in my experience.
Jarama & Mugello were good as well.

Thanks, I think we may give it a go for their classic weekend in June........It looks like a lovel area!

Bloody hell Schnozz we were there that week but by accident, a crowd of us did a 'take a £300 car to the ring trip'.
We stayed at the Blau Ecke in Adenau and were suprised when an Aussie race team turned up for the 24h (and gave us advice on the aero packs we had fitted to our wrecks), seemed a good atmosphere we may give it a proper go next year.

I thought the Spa 24hr could be good too.
This year the pic galleries on EI showed a show in the town centre with everybody out and about inspsecting the cars, then the cars driving back to the track:

Hiya chap, long time no speak! Gutted I didn't bump into you mate as we were staying walking distance from Adenau in some apartments we rented right alongsidet he track. We went into Adenau for food and beers regularly over the weekend! Surprised you didnt happen to notice as me and my usual Lemans mate Dave went as Maverick and Goose this year and had a special personalised plate throughout our time in Germany.

Good to hear from you Schnozz.
We saw the Gaylord gayman, which gave us a chuckle and you're photo was taken right outside our hotel.
We unfortunatly had to suffer less illustrious transport due the £300 challenge budget.

We showed the aussies at the hotel this video and told them that the cinq let go, but we managed to repair it!

I think we may go to the 24h on purpose next year although I might take the Chim for comfort as we chopped the springs on the Rover and it ruined my back.

Yes it was a small car park, even if it had been bigger it wouldn't have stopped me 'accidently' reversing into the little yellow blighter each morning.

Morning all,
Does anyone have anymore useful links to the Nurburgring 24hr?
We may be looking for an alternative to LeMans in 09 and I've heard some goog things about the ring trip.
Need to know about things like how far? Where to get tickets? Camp or hotel? Best bars? Best viewing areas, that sort of thing.

I know some of you take a holiday to see the LM24, but if you fancy something different there is a brill weekend at Vigeant near Poitiers the same weekend as the prequal, end of May. The circuit is known as Val de Viennes. It is a weekend to raise money for cancer but if you look at the video here:-

After last year, having "done" the L.M. Classic and the Zolder 24, we (Felters and self) thought it might be a grin to put some sort of tour together but this time in an older car, something to add a little adventure to it all, so we've bought an old Saab 96 and we are now trying to plan the tour for next year, some of the things, events or places we are kicking around are,

The Schlumpf museum

A vinyard

Nurburgring, possibly take the BMW "taxi" service trip around the ring.
