Nano Production Stopped Amid Violence

Protests from local farmers halt production 'indefinately' of world's cheapest car

Production of the world's cheapest car, the Tata Nano, has been stopped indefinitely after violent protests, it has been reported. Tata is understood to be looking to relocate its Indian factory after a clash with farmers who are claiming rights to the land where it is located.

The farmers in West bengal say they want a return of the 400 acres of land and their violent protests have stopped any work being done at the factory. Tata is calling the situation at the plant 'hostile and intimidating'.

The demonstrators are accusing Tata of taking the land from the them to build the plant in Singur, 50km from Calcutta. Now Tata is being forced to look at relocating the factory to six other sites in India, despite reportedly investing $350million into the Singur plant. It said it had a 'deadline' to meet to build the $2,500 car.

'There is no way this plant could operate efficiently unless the environment became congenial and supportive of the project,' a company spokesman said.

One of the leaders of the protest movement said farmers' rights to their land had to be taken into consideration. 'It is Tata's decision, not ours," he said of the move to stop work,' he said. 'We never asked them to leave.'

Good, this hateful pokemon lookalike car has stopped production. Although I admire how they can build a car for so little money at all, it's just a stheap. But am I right in saying it is mid engined? If so stick a 500bhp nitrous'd V8 in there, then sell it on the cheap. Even I would buy it then

Based on what evidence? Sure, it has been designed and is being built to a price and you get what you pay for. But you have to compare apples with apples and the competition for new vehicles which can carry 4 people at this price is not anything else with the levels of sophistication the Nano has - it even has 4 wheels!

Shame about the problems, but at least the locals are doing something about it unlike here. Will probably provide Tata with the excuse they need to raise the price slightly given the component cost increases they have seen.

And this is from the bloke that is going to turn Jaguar around eh?? Heaven help us. he will just use it as another excuse to cover up the cock-up in his original £1300 car for the masses. Which it appears he got very wrong indeed.

No Nano, good.

But I'm bemused by the farmer's protest...didn't they notice the factory being built?!!
..perhaps it's very small though....a nanofactory (sorry!)

a brief background on how india works.....corruption, manipulation and instigation of various issues.

All of the above work on a case by case basis and also on the basis of who is in power and who wants to be compensated at what time.

in short. Tata could have had all neccessary approvals to build the plant...but the farmers who are not on the same educational, economic and technological stature as EU/western counterparts can be instigated to riot by certain individuals who may not have been compensated..

i hate political correctness..it just makes the whole thing sound complicated...im sure you understand. now you know why Indian companies who make money in a large growing market like india is diversifying and buying foriegn companies...its so much easier to do business abroad!!!!!!

Apparently it costs a lot more than the "$2,500" price would have us believe....

Wow - "Nano is like a Veyron" headline wink

Why don't they just pay the farmers off.
Thats what the farmers want (if they didn't they would have protested before the factory was built).

400 acres of agricultural land in India can't be that expensive so why don't they just buy it legally from who ever has a legal claim to it.

Production of this car WILL still go ahead, just in another factory - which they will have to build at further cost to the environment. At least this should help to slow India's rapid economic boom.
