Thinking of taking the GF away next weekend, and Ive always quite fancied the Lake District.
Has anyone got any opinions on it, and know any good places to stay?

Cheers

Depends what you want to do, Ambleside and Grassmere are my favourite bits.

Though I stay out of the Lake District during the warmer months as its much nicer in winter when no-one is around to spoil it for you.

Maryport is nice and a good night out, and Windermere is a really nice place to visit smile

My girlfriend and I had a lovely holiday there in June. We stayed in a really nice B&B called Grisedale Lodge, near Ullswater. It was my first visit to the Lakes, and I'm certainly going back.

If you want a nice hotel with Good food, good beer and great location then try here

They've got some nice four poster rooms, also not far from Ambleside (walking distance).

Do not even consider Maryport in the same sentence as "good"... or anywhere else on the newly re-branded "energy coast" - including Workington, Whitehaven and the like! Maybe for a lads night out but I can't imagine it'll impress the girlfriend!

You might want to consider the northern lakes as an alternative to the Grasmere, Ambleside and Windermere options! Keswick as a "town with a lake" option or perhaps Borrowdale, Loweswater or somewhere like that for something a bit more remote!

Cockermouth's probably your best bet, and safest town, if you're thinking of heading way out west!

Keswick area is better, I find, as it's quieter, and not (quite as) full of scousers.

Are you bringing your Porsche?
If so then can I draw your attention to this event :
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

It is a gathering of sportscars and we are going for a drive through the lakes.

Just thought you might be interested.

That's a coker, as the gathering looks excellent. SH!T!
Thanks anyway, and have fun.

Lovely part of the country.

Some parts get very busy even out of season.

Depends what you want. Bowness is very touristy. Ambleside is busy but still nice to look round with very good outdoor shops. Grasmere very nice but small and also gets busy. Keswick main town in the north so get busy but is nice to look around.

Away from the main 'spine' you can be in some very isolated and quiet spots.

Ullswater is stunning, Wast Water is isolated and vast. Great road to get there.

I love Buttermere, you can walk round it in an afternoon and its a nice easy walk.

There are so many places to see that you can end up sending all the day in the car going from one place to the other.

Autumn is a great time to go with the colours being fantastic.

Have you thought about accommodation yet?

PS KEEP AWAY FROM MARYPORT smile

Maryport, like Workington, Whitehaven and Barrow are all fairly run down Georgian / Victorian towns that haven't had the levels of regeneration, investment and employment opportunities to drag them out of their former maritime, mining, iron and steel heritage of the mid 19th century!

Plenty of pound shops, plenty of unemployment, Friday night drinking circuits around the main streets and a good chance of a fight!

Whitehaven's got quite a nice Georgian town centre and the area around the harbour is nice too. Maryport quayside is also OK, but only for a half-hour drive by and a brisk walk.... not to stay there!

Yep! We stayed in Ulpha (Duddon Valley) in a cottage with the river at the bottom of the garden, situated about 4 miles south of Wrynose and Hardknott Passes and surrounded by fells. No TV or mobile phone reception though!

erm...yes it is a bit...... well most of west coast Cumbria is what you could say 'run down', 'delapidated'.... etc. etc.
Most people if they go into the Lakes areas are then greatly dissapointed if they go too far towards the coast.

So I would say to tourists to stay away from Maryport, Workington, Whitehaven.
Stick to the Lake mountain areas and you will be in the UK's most scenic and beautiful places.
