What temp thermostat for my E36 M50 2.0? 80, 88 or 92?

Hi,
I (probably) need to replace the thermostat on my car, buying a thermostat from German ebay (unless the local dealer or motor factors can supply one cheaper when I ring them tomorrow).
Have a choice on there of 80, 88 or 92 degrees celsius, what is standard for this engine, what benefit would the others have (Guessing that a lower temp one would open earlier and allow the rest of the engine to warm up in less time, heat coming through the vents faster..?)

Put the last seven of your VIN into the link above, select engine and then the water pump/thermostat icon, this will tell you what your car should have. If you use a stat that opens earlier then the engine will take longer to get upto full operating temp, especially in winter, if you use a stat that opens at a higher temp the in the summer the cooling may be a little compromised, I would stick to the same temp that is current fitted.

Suppose the 88 will be ok? I'ts what that site reckons mine was built with.
Well the temp gauge in car never goes above half way, and don't get hot air through, just mildly warm, so having read up a bit I think the thermostat is stuck closed. I have seen one (88) with an aluminium housing (better than standard) for £34 delivered, from the US.
Also read that maybe I need a new water pump with metal impeller, but will try doing the thermostat first.
