what a rip offfurious

£72 for adults over 10 years. my daughter needs a new passport and they want £46 for another 5 years.

So I would be paying more for my daughters passports over 10 years than my own. alway thought the renewal was free for kids until i looked online at the passport office

How unusual !

Something that you HAVE to have. And it's over priced.

Makes a nice change. smile

well that's not strictly true now is it - you only have to have one if you chose to go abroad. Of course if you are like me it's a bit of an arse as on a per-use basis my last passport cost about £35 per trip.

I had to renew my passport recently and was staggered by the cost considering its unavoidable.
I would have thought that some of the tax I pay would subsidise it.

Bloody rubbish isn't it?! We just recently got a passport for my 6 month old baby daughter. Not only was the fee a pain in the ar5e but we specifiaclly wrote to them and asked them to keep her birth certificate neat, flat and unfolded, just as we had sent it to them. But no, it came back looking like they had used it in their lunchtime origami lesson.furious

At least you weren't charged €220 (£178), for your passport renewal.

As an British expat in Austria, that was what I had to pay. I asked why the extra £100, and I was told "postage". rolleyes

Think yourself lucky!!!!

That'll be another of Browns stealth taxes - the Pre Brown cost of a passport was £18 no its £72!

A 400% rise!

The cost of obtaining a standard passport over the years has been as follows. It is expected that fees will rise to at least £93 to help fund the National Identity Register and ID cards.

  • £72 - 4 October 2007 - due to an increase in the consular premium added by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office
  • £66 - 5 October 2006 - for the introduction of the latest generation passport, anti-fraud measures and interviews for first-time applicants
  • £51 - 1 December 2005 - to reflect the cost of implementing key anti-fraud measures
  • £42 - 2 October 2003 - to pay for new anti-fraud measures
  • £33 - 21 November 2002
  • £30 - 14 January 2002
  • £28 - 16 December 1999 - to fund a major overhaul of the Passport Agency following the summer crisis
  • £21 - 26 March 1998
  • £18 - November 1992

Took family on holiday earlier this year. Mine was valid but wife's and son's had expired, daughter needed a new one. Total came to more than £200 for the lot! Bloody stupid. This was more than the rental on the villa for the week, and wasn't far off the price of the villa and the hire car added together!

And dont get me started on the queues at 'immigration' to GET BACK INTO MY OWN COUNTRY....

Phah....

I paid well over £100 for my Son's passport this year which included photo's and the 'long' birth cirtificate as the 'small' one is not good enough.

Can't you put kids on their parents passports anymore? I don't think I had my own passport until I was about 12

No that changed that about 9 years ago, now everyone needs their own passport, including the 3 week baby that can't even hold it's own head up. My youngest sister had a passport photo of her at 9 months for about 5 years that my Dad had had to take as we couldn't put her in a passport photo booth, got chuckles when checking in for flights and getting through passport control.

Nope, they have their own now. Which is a bit daft as they change so much the photo of minimechs at 4 months is already pretty pointless now he's 11 months.

The government talk about inflation being under control. Yet we are seeing massive rises in certain areas. But as pointed out above, we have seen a tripling of the passport costs. Ok, its not essential and its not something that everyone has. But the massive rises in the cost of things like this does contribute as a whole to pressures of inflation and the fact that the government are fueling them is bizarre.

They talk about helping families and the like, yet keep putting up prices and taxes themselves. Mad nutters the lot of them.
