Hi folks,
I'm looking for a bit of advice about my monaro and getting a few extra horses out of it. In particular i'm looking at exhaust and intake manifold. First thing then is header pipes. Shorties (OBX or JBA brand) or Mid Length (Pace setters or SLP). I know that Wortec are popular in the UK but not having an arm and leg to spend I'm looking to the US LS1/6 market for parts. If I go for midlength what will I need to do to get them to fit the orriginal Y pipes. At the other end does anyone have any experience of The SLP Flo Max Cat back?
Up at the air in end of the engine I've already fitted a K&N typhoon with ported MAF and MAF pipe. I'm now looking to open up the air intake manifold by swapping the original unit with a either a FAST 92mm, an 85mm melbourne cars unit or an 85mm typhoon. Any suggestions and advice about what throttle body to go with.

Unless you're car is LHD I'd be wary of headers from the US and steering column interference. I have an SLP Loudmouth catback on my '04 Monaro (twin central silencers and no rear box). Before I modified it by adding a rear box it was DRONE DRONE DRONE - even with headers. With the rear box it is perfect.

US headers wont fit properly due to LHD steering setup as mentioned, but catback should be fine. Oz brands will of course work fine too. The wortec ones look a pretty good design and are local made. Forget swapping your intake over, the stock LS6 which is on your LS1 is very good. There is no point fitting the fast intake unless you are going to sort out the rest of the engine past the intake, (ie) Heads and Cam.
Whats the K&N typhoon? Got any pics? The ozzies will tell you an OTRCAI is best and I agree, most stout NA setups also lose the MAF. Dont buy any metal intake manifolds its heat-soak suicide.
What are your power goals? Do you want to stay NA? You need to answer the basic questions first otherwise you will probably end up throwing money away on mods that either dont work, or wont work with your setup. Have a look at the dyno day results to see what works and what doesnt.

Not sure about this LHD v RHD thing!! Theory is sound, but a lot of headers I've seen are symetrical so should fit either, the Yanks seem to swear by 'Kooks' stuff, (www.kookscustomheaders.com/category.php?cname=Headers&sname=General%20Motors&pname=2004-2006%20(LS1/LS2)%20GTO)don't think anyone sells it over here, but the LS1.com boys seem to rate them.
LS1 and LS6 manifolds are different (got an excellant dyno book on all this), The LS6 is actually a real good option performing almost as well as a FAST Intake, but at less cost, you can also purchase from pretty much any GM supplier as it's listed in the power parts catalogue.
That little lot combined with a GM Hot Cam, should have you well up in the 400 BHP stakes...
I agree that Wortec do seem to be a bit pricey when you compare what comes out of the states. I enquired about difillipo, but he was very short on actual specifications, so I left that one
Monnington's right I think Kooks are about the best you can get, but even the Yanks moan about the price. Although headers/ intake may get you a few more horses (20 -25), you won't notice it. Don't go for shorties IMHO, I like long tubes which is what I went for and you need to think about the upgrade path. i.e big diameter primaries can be counter productive unless the rest of the system requires them.
If you want easy instant bolt on horses you want a supercharger but at a cost. If not, the first noticeable power increase will come from a cam, and then flowed heads. Whether you go for FI or NA, ultimately there's no substitute for cubic inches, size matters in this respect. You will also need a tune and over this side of the pond, that is pricey too but an absolute necessity, unless you invest in you own kit e.g Efilive, but a word of warning here, I am at the very bottom end of a steep learning curve with this one at the moment, and its very time consuming.
