I bought an iPhone in July - very pleased with it I am! However, in August I was in the USA for three weeks and Sweden for one week. I used the phone for reading and writing emails most days. Today I received my first bill from O2 -and it came to a mere £1700! Stone me I thought! I could have bought 7 iPhones for that!

So phoned up O2 and told them of my surprise and they agreed to waive the bill as it was my first bill - which was nice!

So anyone got any suggestions about picking up emails from the USA and Europe without costing an arm and a leg?

Use WiFi. Even if you have to pay for it, it will still work out cheaper than roaming data charges.

turn off data when abroad, it's in the settings, and use wifi.

Lucky you! Wish I would get that kind of person when I contact 02. Even canceling my contract at the proper time has proven to be a nightmare!

Surely thats a typo. £1700, and they just said forget it?

I highly doubt it.

What sort of altitude are you doubting it from? I like specifics.

Yep, I got the distinct impression that I wasn't the first person who had phoned up to express a degree of surprise! I also explained that a certain "Warehouse", sold me the phone and the sales person described the iPhone as the "ideal travel companion".

That's all well and good but not everywhere has wifi. When in Sweden recently I was in the middle of the back of beyond (though oddly enough a strong mobile phone signal!)

I have been with 02 for the last 18 months, I spend more time abroad than at home and most of that time is spent on international calls, picking up emails and browsing the web. Most expensive bill to date was about £1500 but that is on a corporate rate.

Turn off data when you are roaming. Almost all of the applications are data driven and the costs are REALLY high for data. The phone call charges are pretty good so its not these. Exactly how much data did you use?

Worth trying to see what the options are. 1 week in the USA for me resulted in around £60 worth of data, and I am on a preferential data contract.

Not really, no future bills will be waived I've been told. In fact, I'm now looking for alternatives to my iPhone.

Spectrum for stuff like mobile 'phones and digital TV is awarded on a beauty contest basis not a highest bidder basis in Sweden so all of the successful networks have to offer very high % coverage to have a chance of getting a license.
