The South Island of New Zealand is devoid of the beauty that is the Cerbera. As such I’m looking to correct the problem and export an example to grace the roads of New Zealand. I noted a few threads on here of late that had rattled the dust from a few cars and wondered if there were yet more cars to be similarly removed from their dust encasement.
I've a budget of 10-12k, chassis has to be devoid of rust. If it's rusty NZ customs will reject the car for road use. The car will also be professionally assessed so honesty in regards to any faults would be appreciated (as it saves your time and my money). I'd prefer a 4.5 or a 4.2 with a swap to the 4.5 crank and the aux shaft replaced, but any AJP8 would more than stretch my grin. Cat C or D repaired cars aren’t an issue so long as the repair has been completed to a very high standard.
Many thanks to those that I have managed to address from other threads, I'm certainly considering your cars. As a systems analyst I just wish to ensure that I address every avenue or possibility before selecting a car to ship half way around the world.
Daniel.

There was an article in Sprint mag about 3 years ago about the problems importing a TVR to New Zealand. Its not that easy apparantly. Simomsparrow from new zealand. Not sure whether he knows.

Surely all TVR chassis have rust, surface rust. Only a freshly repainted one will be withuot rust?

A budget of 10-12k is the bottom figure for an early Cerbera surely.

Im sure this has been touched upon on here before. IIRC, if the car falls foul of NZ import laws, the only (main?) way/s around it are if the vehicle is of historical importance (err, the only TVR Cerb in NZ?) or if it's shipped out in component parts and re-assembled (or is that the States?)

Ive never been to NZ, but have freinds who have emigrated and a brother who worked out there for a year. From what I understand about the roads, a Cerb would be completely wasted over there. Be a shame such a fine motor wouldnt get to stretch his/her legs very often frown

Spent 6 years in the UK and there are considerably better roads for stretching the legs of a GT in NZ than anywhere I've been in the UK.

In regards to import regs. I've already thoroughly investigated it. Recent regulation changes allow for 200 "special interest vehicles" to be imported a year. I've already spoken with NZ Land Transport and had a Cerbera "pre-approved"

The bottom has really dropped out of the market of late. There are some fantastic cars on the market that meet my criteria and my budget.

I doubt there's a Cerb for sale with a non-rusty chassis, unless it has had a complete chassis refurb in the past few years.

Fubes, you're funny when you're not even trying.

"Err, I think you may have to take it to bits... actually that might be Zimbabwe. I've never been to the Arctic circle, but I think it's too hot to go outside at lunchtime"

Good work buddy! winkbiggrin

I’ve had the pleasure of driving to or through every single town in the South Island of NZ, the absolutely stunning vistas aside (I don't have the eloquence to describe them), some of those roads are magnificent, being able to see for several miles through mountainous twisties you can overtake on 1/2 mile bends (even in a Transit Camper) as you've seen the road leading from the opposite direction for several minutes before you got there.

Admittedly, as mentioned, I was driving a Transit Camper but the speed limits were correctly signed as I recall; if it signed a bend at 70 you could be sure that the Transit would almost lift a leg taking it at that speed - very interesting when there's a 00's" drop on the other side.

[exaggeration_mode]Oh and another thing, there's about 10 whole people in the South Island and only six cars! So the roads are clear[/exaggeration_mode].

NZ has always been top of my places to live - like the UK would have been if not covered in concrete - but there's not enough of a population for me to make money.

To the OP, you'll have a blast - be sure to post some pics from Frans Joseph, Mt Cook and Arthurs Pass.

I gather yours was a dog then? "Bought for £12,100 in August 2006 at 23,700 miles."

You can even get sub 12k cars from dealers with 12 month warranty... wonder if they'll cover it in antipodea

pointless getting argumentative over valuations. Chassis rust will need attention with your budget. That'll cost you a packet.

Not being argumentitive, just curious as to Byker's experience with a car that he purchased in my budget range several years ago. Especially as he stated "A budget of 10-12k is the bottom figure for an early Cerbera surely."

Perhaps I am looking in the wrong budget bracket. Or perhaps I should be looking for a car to completely restore to Concourse condition once landed in NZ.

The cars from Fenhurst and Smallbrook (http://users.autoexposure.co.uk/drilldown.cfm?Account=AETA52790&VehicleID=AETV19714854&Image=http://users.autoexposure.co.uk/is/autoedit/AETA52790/AETV19714854_1a.jpg) and several cars from PH'ers look very tempting, however I'm well aware that Cerberas can look very good from a distance and be complete dogs from behind the wheel.

Unforunately as I'm half way around the world I can't just jump in a car and go to inspect and purchase a car instantly. I'll have to pay to have the cars professionally assessed, hence my desire to get as large a sample group with which to select a few to have inspected.

I just bought that 97 Cerbera from Fernhurst, to be honest with you I drove about three and this was by far the cheapest and it is an absolute corker. I had a budget up to around 20k but this car pulls like a train, new nitron shock, new Clutch and master cylonder, new battery and just feels absolutely right. Fernies will do the 6k service which it is due and also put 12 months MOT and a 12 month warranty on it all for £11.995.. Bargain..

As this is the third TVR I have bought from them I had a good look at it on a ramp and the chassis is in excellent order. I will probably get it waxoyled in about a year at its next service but apart from that it is mint it even had no wear to the drives side seat bolster!..

Can't wait to pick it up next month..

I must say that having dealt with them on and off for years (this will be my fourth TVR and they have serviced and looked after all of them) they are the only people I really trust, know and have recommended to about two people who both bought TVR's from them in the past...

Been to NZ and love it. Would move there myself if I had the dosh and a job. Roads are cerb heaven, and have considered this very issue.

If you need to assemble in NZ, get a speed six. Mine has been stripped down loads over the years and all the bolts are lovely and freehehe

Thanks Chim. It's an option that I'm seriously considering. I've put on hold my purchase just until I finish the final round of the NZ National Off Road Racing series. It's very time consuming to prep the car to race and I don't want to be distracted / rushed while purchasing a Cerb that I by law have to retain for four years.

Buffoon, NZ is certainly a beaufitul place, but it's not for everyone. Cost of living may be low compared with that of the UK but salaries here are substancially lower. It's too small to advance much of a career or to earn a good retirement stash.
If you're into outdoor sports, want a safe(ish) environment to bring up children or have money to sit back and enjoy the scenery then NZ is the place.
So your six hasn't been the best of purchases?
