Firstly, I've no intention of upsetting nor offending anyone with this.

Have any of you any experiance with the Jehovah's Witnesses?

Having had a recent encounter with some Jehovah's Witness members recently I was wondering what any of you chaps or chappetes thought them?

There a bit like flying ants. I get them once a year around here, just had one ask me if i wanted to know of a better life.
Nope, my life of booze, gambling and hookers is fine for me thanks, tata.

They don't bomb, threaten and kill people like some religions do, they just brainwash you. In my opinion, of course.

used to work nights years ago, 11 am one day and heard this banging on the door, ignored it as if was postman he would leave a note, so no, they kept banging on the door....

ran downstairs just remembering to put on some pants (naked in bed), opened the door and asked them wtf were they banging on the fking door for so early, sharp intake of breath as they and their young brats realised that my pants were not on that well and bits were hanging out the side smile

they never came back !

another lot came round to a different place and told them that I used to be a jehovah, but it was great now that had left

last lot in current house, just told them to fk off as not into god

Would I be right in saying that they're not christian in the regular sense but more their own variation on the theme?

Also, I get the impression they try to dissasociate themselves from the regular non believing bulk of the public?

They only think the world is around 2500 years old don't they!? Ridiculous!

MrsR works from home and made the mistake of talking to them once and they just kept coming back. Whilst not religious, she does have quite a good knowledge of most of them though so ended up tearing their whole religion to pieces by pointing out all of the flaws and contradictions in it.

The last visit ended by them making their excuses and leaving! hehe

I used to work with one of them tha' jay-dubs over 20 years ago... we are still chatting pals / business associates on occasion - usually when I ask the firm where he works to print short run digital stuff for LCUK.

He's still a top bloke years later, his jokes were always funny and always 'tell-your-granny' clean...

We had a simple arrangement - we didn't talk about religion after a couple of minor tussles in the first two weeks of being studio colleagues at a print company from 1984 - 1988 after which I moved to London.

Shared 'distress' makes for some degree of comradeship, whatever your colour or faith - and we weren't so very distressed, except in the winter when the old mill the firm was (still is!) in would be f' f' f' freezing cold all the time and we had to sit at our Macs with thick gloves on and scarves - made for some interesting typinhkfdhj errrorro ro ors!!

He's still there - having started at the firm aged 17 in 1977 and is now 48. He's not sure if he likes the job yet or whether the company would like him to stay on after this short initial training period...

He never came knocking on my door at home or tried to convert / brainwash me. My wife and I met up with him and his wife a few years ago for lunch and his wife 'broke the code' with my wife for a moment but not for any time longer than that - I guess they have to try, seems fair enough to me. As I recall we had a ruddy good and a very long lunch, a LOT of beer was consumed by both the chaps, lots of food was eaten, laughter and general laddishness ensued for all four of us, girls drove boys home... regular-like eh?

He drives a Alfa 159 these days because he became a 'bit' of long term Alfa fan after he bought his Alfetta 2.0 saloon in the early 80s... this 159 must therefore be Alfa number 7 or 8 for him. I remember he had a lot of grief with a bright blue 33 but never anything much with any of the others he's had - the Alfetta had a fabulous interior as I recall, just increasingly less and less of a body as time went by...

When they come a' knocking, you could always do what I do and say your time is very short, thank them for the copy of whatever the want to give you to read (if anything) then just smile and politely say 'have a good day' and leave it at that. Surely there's no need to be rude to people like this, especially when they think they are doing something for your benefit?

I admit, they have some very odd views, think some very odd thoughts but, exactly when did you hear of a JW hijacking an aircraft to fly it into a tall building or strap a stack of grenades around themselves and blast up a bus full of kids? Or come to that, when have the JW's actually created any kind of violence that damaged people anywhere for any reason at all.

I stress, I'm not a Jehovahs Witness but would like to remind fellow PH folk to Google something about them in relation to the holocaust and numerous other instances of intolerant persecutions over the years.

Just people really, usually very decent folk at that.

They view themselves as Christian- more Christian in teachings than many other Christians, in fact, since they try to model their structures and teachings on the early Christian congregation mentioned in the bible. Other Christian groups would view them as different, though, as they reject ideas such the Trinity, Hellfire, Limbo (forgotten the correct word. Purgatory?), Christmas, Heavenly resurection for (the vast majority of) the faithful, the Immortal Soul and other doctrines which many Christian denominations hold to. Though they have a scriptural basis for doing so in each case.

In keeping with Jesus comment of "they are no part of the world, just as I am no part of the world", they generally associate socially only amongst themselves, whilst being as friendly, decent, upstanding and non-attatched to non-witnesses as possible. Although the reality changes from congregation to congregation and between individuals, as you'd expect with any large demographic of real people. Basically, its a recognition of how your peers affect your views/morals/character etc, by choosing your associates, you can shape your own attributes.

Personal opinion only, but I feel the whole "choosing who you associate" thing is perhaps at the root of any social problems they do encounter, if their congregation is too small. But, as someone who's been a Jehovah's Witness for many years and who, technically, still-kind-of-is, I'd have to say that by & large they're a great bunch. And on a national level, an asset- pay taxes, pacifist, honest, value education (though, it could be argued, perhaps not further education), usually quite reasonable in most daily things. You will never be mugged, stabbed or rioted at by a Witness.

Ive turned out a little eccentric compared to other people of my generation, but I dont think I'd change a thing about my upbringing.

A good friend of the family had an encounter with the Jehovahs Witnesses which will stick in my mind forever.

The lady in question (Barbara) has quite a brisk, stern way of doing things. On the afternoon of the event, she had just picked her two daughters up from school and was in the process of preparing the kids dinner (bad traffic back from school, kids playing up, husband sitting on the sofa with his feet up, so all in all pretty stressed out). Then, the door bell rang.... She answered the door only to be confronted by two Jehovahs Witnesses clutching the usual magazines etc and one of them (in a soft voice) said "Do you think there will ever be peace in this world?" to which Barbara replied "not with fcensoreding people like you knocking on my door there won't be" and slammed the door......

Needless to say, they never returned!!

On a similar note, my uncle answered the door to to some charity collectors and the lady said "Good afternoon, we are collecting for Barnados Childrens Charity" to which my uncle shouted out "come on kids, get your jackets!" biglaugh Classic, should have seen the look on the womens faces yikes !!!

By coincidence they were around here knocking on doors this morning.

We were 'out' or 'asleep' at the time, whenever it was, can't quite remember.

Overall - nuisance.

No need to be rude really. I've always just said "not interested" and they've gone away. Mind you the burning pentagram on the lawn and 666 tatoo'd on my forehead might give them a clue that I'm not going to be swayed by a copy of watchtower.

My aunt and uncle are JW's, and are lovely folk. Through their church they're always out and about, looking after people in the community and basically just being nice people.

You mean, like revolutionary socialists - who have nothing and want to share it with everyone else?!

As to them seeming happy, I suspect the exterior and interior are often out of synch.

Yebbut, they're real people, in your family, you know them.

To a lot of people it's just a matter of getting doorstepped once too often, coupled with the time-old spiritual fruits vs. religious nuts dislike.
