I have brought a golf mkv diesel 170ps with the dsg gearbox. The car is great but when you are at a junction & you push the throttle (on a hill or not) there is quite a delay between the car doing anything for about 2 seconds (which dont sound a lot but when you are trying to get out of a busy junction & a 40 ton artic is heading for you with lights flashing & horn going) which is rubbish. Is it a fault with my car or a common prob? Also can i get this fixed with remap or something?
cheers guys

I drove an automatic A4 Tdi 130 the other day and that was the same, it wasn't 2 seconds but there was an alarming delay when I put my foot on the gas. I just put it down to the fact that the engine has sod all power until the turbo spools up.

hi iaiin, when i was looking for a car 5 mths ago i test drove an a3 20tdi 170bhp dsg.As you probably know this is the same engine as yours. it was terrible . i reckon 2 second delay was about right. i asked the salesman who was with me to drive it back as i reckoned there was something wrong with it.

.i hadnt driven a diesel before ,thought this was the dreaded turbo lag id heard about.I test drove a bmw 120dauto have to say different class which is what i bought.

Ive since been told the 170bhp version (your engine) can get problems with the particulate filter ,if the car spends its life in urban traffic. Hope that is your problem and i wish you luck.

Thanks for reply, i will ask vw to have a look, its not turbo lag as that would be lack of power , this is no response to pedal!

Could well be the lag if you're not used to it.

I had an astra tdi as a courtesy car whilst my mk2 golf was being fixed and the lag was actually a little bit dangerous. Pull overtaking had to take a bit of guess work as to when the turbo would kick in

Turbo lag wouldn't mean a lack in performance though

Full throttle gearchanges are the only way!

I;ve got a DSG R32 and there is a slight lag due to the nature of the DSG gearbox. You soon get used to it.

A bing and bry sale?

To the OP: what happens if you bring the revs up and slip the clutch? Does it bog or launch?
I too have driven the A3 170bhp model which was pretty dull, every junction was:

foot to the floor,
wait...
wait...
wait...
wow, there's the power...
oh, it's gone again,
never mind, into second gear.... etc etc.

It's a DSG model so he can't slip the clutch

My dad had a 2.0TDI-170 A3 Sport DSG as a courtesy car, he had no problems with it what-so-ever, nor could he find any faults with it, he didn't even realise it was a DSG, He thought it was a normal multi-tronic we had in an A4 2.0TFSI which was great in Sport.

Cobblers, complete and utter rubbish, i've happily done nearly 25k in mine in 18 months and never experienced this problem, perhaps its the DSG??

hi there, ie got a mk5 golf, and i had a very scary situation where i needed a quick start to avoid a lorry, foot on the pedal, clutch up, very little power, and then just in time i was off. scary stuff. (mines a 1.4 by the way). could it be the drive by wire being slow to react?

matt3001 the 2nd comment ill take, as thats down to personal preference, as for "cobblers complete and utter rubbish"

All im doing is trying to help a guy with his car,and you come at me with a condescending, patronising comment like that.I dont recall you being with me on that day.

Tell you what, meet me at audi brentford west london and we will meet the salesman who took me for the test drive. Id hate to meet you in a pub boring everyone to death with your views no one elses counts accept your own.People like you are laughable. I was going to put it down to low self esteem ,then i saw your a management consultant LMAO ive met enough of you characters in my time and your attitude fits with 99% of them.

You spend your whole lives telling other people what to do,but cant do it yourselves.Thank christ i dont know you you would do my head in. You would probably make a good character for the fast show,The "i know everything man"

My 3.0d (A8) does something similar. Just occasionally it is very slow to pick up at junctions, but after about 1 secod it then sets off at hell of a rate!

Its taking a bit of getting used to to be honest. I'll mention it to the garage at service time, but I think its just the way it is

My A4 3.0 TDi Cab is the same. I heard that it's an ecu feature to limit the torque from standstill, so the clutch isn't burnt out prematurely. Mine's an auto, but the ecu is the same I guess. Once it picks up and goes, it's OK.
