It's not often I get the chance to drive the Cup Car on the road, but in an attempt to reach 1500kms of running in, I took to the M3 and the old A30, joining at Micheldever via the A303, yesterday morning via Stockbridge (recommend Langtry's Tearooms for coffee and tea cake), Salisbury and Shaftesbury.

Even between 9.30 and 10.00 this lovely old road was almost empty. Well behaved with a 4000rpm limit it was still fun. Only two numpty's flashed, one an Astra van because I had my headlights on (wouldn't you in some light mist and 4000 flat in fifth??) and a Land Rover doing 40mph who didn't like me overtaking!! I just waved back.....

Sight lines on this road are magnificent in some areas allowing for some hooligan speeds in perfect safety. Black top isn't too bad, but a few bumps have to be watched out for!

However, coming back late afternoon on the 303 and the M3, I really do wonder why they bother with having 2 or 3 lanes since the inside lane was empty most of the time, with no bugger in his repmobile wanting to give up his/her place in the 'fast' (hah!) lane.

And I still got 23mpg!!!

Looking forward to some more, (only 950kms to go...)then the plates come off, slicks go on and it's Track Days -whoopee!!

Any chance of bringing it to Brunters Melv? Even if you can't or won't VMAX it, great eye candy nonetheless. Plus, we all get a close look at a Cup car?

Just a thought.

I originally come from shaftesbury and know those roads well. The stretch from stockbridge to salisbury can be particularly rapid...

Shouldn`t say this but it`s normally quiet pretty much through the day and is a pleasant relief from the numpty-ridden M3/A303.

Its a smashing area around there. We often head over to Stockbridge (we know an excellent pub close to Stockbridge with great food) and beyond for a drive.

As you say - one can enjoy a good blast - and there are also some excellent twisties for a more technical challenge too...

I had to visit a company in Poole a few months ago and decided to take the Porsche After a quick run down the A34, I turned off onto the A30 to Salisbury - very nice road Averaged 60mph easily on that journey

I'd love to Greg, if only to find out if its quoted top speed really is 171mph!! It'll do 150 on track, no probs, then the corners loom large!!

But, I'd much rather be going to the PCGB Club offcials conference that day, not.....

Forgot to mention, a black 996 Turbo waved at me, somewhere along the 303 on the way back -I was so stunned that I didn't wave back quick enough!! Sorry!

700km to go. Tried 5000rpm this morning , oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, and still 2000rpm to go -I'd forgotten what it was like when that 'switch' comes in at 4200...
