An item I wish to purchase on Ebay is £100 plus £80 delivery which I'm happy to pay as it still works out £100 cheaper than buying in the UK.

Was wondering if I'd have to pay any import duty on top of that price? if so is it on the £100 the item costs or on the £180 that includes delivery?

Thanks for your help.

Yes and you have to pay tax on shipping as well and sometimes a handling fee from the shipping company. Works out at 22-25% on top!

Thtas if you get stung for it. its hit and miss.

Do a search on here. exact details have been posted many times
(PS don't belive that gift bullst, old wives tale)

Short answer Yes. Long answer maybe not. It's a bit of a lottery, I regularly get stuff through the post that slips through the net but also some packages get stopped by Parcel Force etc and they won't release them until you pay Duty, VAT and their own handling charge(b@st@rds)

Excerpt

2.2 Do I have to pay import duties and/or import VAT on goods sent to me?
Most goods arriving in the UK from outside the EU are liable to any or all of the following taxes:

customs duty
excise duty
import VAT
and must be paid whether:

you purchase the goods or receive them as a gift;
the goods are new or used (including antiques)
the goods are for your private use or for sale

Don't quote me on this.

Send the seller a zero value package 'for repair'

They then return your item repaired or replaced at no cost.

Tax is payable on the work done, in this case nothing.

My experience of this is that size matters - if it's big, you're more likely to be charged on it, if it's small there's more chance it will get through the net, hit and miss like others say, so budget to pay tax and if you don't it's a bonus.
