i live in gods waiting room - eastbourne - and near me is this wierd patch of land that is perhaps 6m by 4 on a triangular plot that is owned by no-one. its too small for a house and im not interested in fiscal gain but it struck me that living in a flat as i do i could at least put the scrap to some use - grow some veg etc. is there a mechanism to allow me to use this piece of land? as it is its overgrown with spiky plants and long grass and it seems a shame that its just sitting there. can i just go to work with my strimmer?

Speak to the council. Its probably a waste of resources for them, they have to edge the grass and cut it, there is no harm in asking.

There was an item on Radio 2 a few months ago about people who were going out at night an "gardening" patches of land like the one you describe.

They were doing this for the pleasure of it and to make their neighbourhood a bit nicer.

Af course there were those in the council who were coming up with all sorts of BS about it being illegal and H&S regs etc.

One guy got stopped by plod who aske what he was doing
When he told them they wished him luck and carried onhehe
