Mercedes used TVR as SLR engine test rig.

Watched a documentary (World of Wonder) this morning on German television before I came into work. The documentary was devoted to the development of the SLR (which i have just seen at the IAA, but didnt like, looks like a boy racer SL). The most interesting thing though was that they used a heavily modified TVR Cerbera as the test rig for the new SLR engine. As well a chassis modifications the bonnet had been altered to accept the superchargers and the engines huge size along with the frontal air intake (on the SLR it is in the Mercedes cross-hairs). Interesting that both BMW and Mercedes have both used english sportscar manufacturers for their engine testing (BMW used an Ultima for the F1 engine).

The documentary also had a good insight into the chassis development and crash structures! Has there been any programs like this in the UK?

Well if they can do that to a Cerbera then maybe they could put a V8 in a Tuscan?

They used two not just one!! I saw the program on RTL or Pro Sieben I can't remember which?

Its actually a good way for TVR to indirectly publicise their products in Germany. The only car that is good enough to test their engine on is.... Shame they had to butcher it so much, well most people havent even heard of TVR over here anyway, which is a real shame.

This isn't exactly new news though, is it? AutoCar documented this fairly well as the SLR project progressed.

I seem to remember a statement from Mercedes-Benz / McLaren that there was little significance to the use of a Cerbera other than the fact that the general dimensions, layout and engine / drivetrain configuation were appropriate to the mule they wanted to build.

Dont tend to read many UK mags, wasnt really publicised in this country (Germany) until now. Do you know any more? Who did the mods? AMG ?
