Driving around New England - What Maps?

A friend of mine (lucky sod) is having a fortnights holiday in New England and over towards Toronto in late Sept, and is looking for a decent set of maps. Preferably the paper sort and not software. We have both had a look at Amazon (both US and UK) and there is a fundamental problem: they only seem to show the cover of the map, so it is impossible to work out which map is best. The ones they _do_ show all seem to be streetmap kinda things, which just showroads, and he is after something much more OS-like with terrain contours and a decent amount of detail.

To be honest, I love maps (and New England too) so if any of the PH masses could recommend a particular type of map, I'd be grateful for both of us!
