Whilst tidying up this morning, stumbled upon a July 30 1988 copy of Motor magazine. Interesting that the Aston Martin was the highest priced car against any other on the market by 40%. Also surprised how pricey 911 Turbo SE's were, as well as the M635CSi vs 328 GTB comparison.

Aston Martin V8 Volante Zagato £95,000
Aston Martin V8 Volante Zagato Conv £149,500

BMW M635CSi £45,780

Ferrari 328 GTB £44,195
Ferrari Testarossa £89,700

Lamborghini Countach £86,076

Porsche 911 Turbo £56,670
Porsche 911 Turbo Cabrio £62,002
Porsche 911 Turbo SE £101,810
Porsche 911 Turbo SE Cabrio £107,142

Don't know about the rest, but a good 1988 Countach is selling for around £65-£70k these days.

A decent M635CSi is worth well over 10K

Interesting thread though smile

I presume the 'SE' is more than a different badge on the back with it being not that far away from double the price!

Compare the price of the 911 to average house price in London at the time and you begin to realise why they used to be considered a lot more exotic than now.

Reading through the history file for a Daytona not that long ago - letter from 1989 stating that the owner agreed to sell the car via a dealer and "would accept no less than £500,000 for it"......

The Carrera GT is only relic of Porsche's glorious exotic past (post 993).

Maybe their dramatic fall off in sales in the last year will lead to a less volume-based strategy.

Ferrari F40 was £192k in 1989 I believe.

I'm not sure that the Zagato versions of the Astons is a fair comparision. I thought the Zagatos were significantly more expensive than the 'normal' Astons.

IIRC it has the flatnose gubbins and various other bits on it. I remember reading an advert for a 911 SE in Sydney that said, if you wanted to be different with your red Porsche in the late 80s, an SE was the way to go!

I agree about the Zagatos & it being a fair price to compare with. Zagatos are usually way more expensive (and an aquired taste if I might add!!!)

Was £193K in '87. That was a fair bit of cash when compared to '87 house prices.

A few years ago when I worked at Bentley Manchester (formally Ron Stratton an Co) I found an old deal book where they had bought and sold a Testarossa in 1988 for £250K!! Now that is a premium!!

Perhapsd a better comparison with the vantage Zagato would be the 288 GTO. A lot of magazines compared them both when new.

At the height of the late 80's madness, there were more than a couple of incidences of people getting on the waiting list and buying any Countach they could. This was almost immediately followed by these speculators selling them for between two and three times the list price.

Certainly, an old member (now long gone, sadly) bought a pre-88.5 spec. QV and sold it within three weeks of delivery for over £200,000 - the pressure to sell became too much, certainly sometimes not-selling is not a realistic option, then as now when it comes to the better kept Countachs!

That QV was last seen inside a container heading for Indonesia in late 1989 - so just before it would have lost some £160,000 of it's post-original sale 'value'...

I'm presuming we all know the tale of the Ferrari GTO that was bought for over £9,000,000 at auction and which lost some £7,000,000 (or similar colossal amount) in the dark days of the early 90's crash...

yikes . eek . yikes . eek . yikes . eek . yikes . eek . yikes . eek . yikes . eek . yikes . eek . yikes . eek . yikes . eek . yikes . eek .

Yup.

50 coupes and 37 volantes IIRC? (was supposed to be 25 volantes from memory when it was launched though and no bonnet bulge, although Vauntlett had his built with the 6.3 in both, and a horrible colour scheme.)

I think they are still holding some pretty high values, even now. Acquired taste? Yes. But they do look better in the flesh, much bigger than you think, like a Fezza 456, look pretty weedy in pictures, but in reality are a whacking great chunk of a car.

Still both 100k.

I remember reading an article on an F40 being sold minutes after the owner took delivery (he paid list at £192/3) for £600k!!!!!!!
