Hello all,
Just been trawling the internet looking for oils and info on oils.
I know that the hand book states 0W40 and I have been using 0W40 Mobil1 religiously - topping up etc.
However, after reading the last few postings on oil it seems that cerbs around 10 years old have been using say 15W50.
On reading about the oils it says that 0W40 will be able to be pumped around the engine far easier than 15W50 from cold, so surely this is much better for our engines. It also says that as the engine gets warmer the oil obviously thins.
Surely then it would be best to use say OW60. Thin at cold temps amd slightly thicker at warmer temperatures than a 0W40 or 0W50.
What's everyone else using and why?

0/40 is fine but older engines tend to get through it much quicker as it pushes past the piston rings easier or summit, hence the shift to the thicker stuff. Yes when cold you are theoretically less protected but that just means you use more caution letting things get up to temp, the UK rarely gets so cold that you run risk from using the 15 rating as long as you are sensible. I have actually been using Halfords motorsport oil of late, 5/50, mainly cos its so easy to get hold of, in comparison I had a hard time finding decent sizes of Mobil Motorsport 15/50 which I used to use, my local Halfords usually only stocking it in 1L bottles.

I have now had contact with nearly every TVR garage in the country and there are mixed views on what oil to use, ranging from 5-40 to 15-50 but from what i gather, as long as the car is heated correctly as per the norm then all of the oils in this range will have no adverse effects on the engines.

My choice over here is a bit limited.
I use Shell Helix Ultra 5W40.
I'm impressed with it as it still looks in good condition when I drain it.
And a about €110.00 (that's euro) for a 23ltr container it's still very affordable.
Which oil debates, always drag on for ever and ever.......I use Shell Helix Ultra 5W40.

I'm with Ireland, Shell Helix Helix Ultra 5W40 is a superb oil, at the top of the list of the premium brands, but what sways it for me is that if you ever need to buy some oil urgently to top up, you can buy it any Shell petrol station, in the UK and Europe. You try doing that with any other brand of oil.
