Hi,

MK4 Golf, 65,000 miles

The Exhaust emissions warning light came on yesteday (Lit up, rather than blinking) should i be on my way to VW as we speak!! or is it more likely to be something minor. I imagine it will need the £60 diagnostic check to resolve, but thought i would enquire here first.

Thanks

The light also comes on when a fault code is recorded.

My money would be on it being one of the remp. sensors which is quite common on these cars.

You;ll need someone with VAG.COM to confirm

An alternative could be a leaking/cracked rubber tube, as was the case when my TT had its warning light come on. The diagnostics revealed that the emissions were higher than allowed, and a replacement hose resolved the issue. I can't recall where the air leak came from.

My A3 did this, it was a faulty Lambda sensor - easily fixed but I don't know how much it would cost as it was done whilst under warranty.

perhaps i could get them to diagnose (£69.95), then go to a family friend garage to do the work..

£69.95 is pretty steep for a 5min job to plug un a cable and read a fault code.

The Vag-com system mentioned above means that it can be done on a laptop, the system costs about the same as 2 £70 dealer trips, or someone with the system could do it for you.

Or you can buy the cable for about 15 quid off ebay and have a look yourself

Aphex, could you provide a link?

Or is anyone with a cable around Leeds?
