engine blowing opinions please
Discussion
Couple of months ago I wanted to try the cerbera 4.2 out in germany. At 260km's per hour I suddenly got oil over the windscreen. I thought the engine was dead. Oilpressure stayed at 40 hot. I have 60 cold. Watertemp stayed normal too.
I decided to mount an oiltank on the engine with enough room to breathe. Nor connected to the airintake anymore.
Took it to Germany again, but it blows the oil through the breathercap of the tank. In 600 km's 2,2 litres of oil. The oil looks black when I take the dipstick out. When cold the left exhaustpipe spits out little black drops. Engine has enough power as far as I can judge this. There is no blue smoke coming out of the exhaust.
Before this happened (I haven't done a lot of miles in it) it took a litre per 1000 km's. Maybe a little less. That should be normal for a cerb v8.
The car has done 28000 miles and is an aerly one being built at the end of 1996. It did receive a new engine from the factory as I have the newer bloch with the dipstick in front.

Sounds as though you have a fair amount of "blow-by" if it is coming out of the breather. Get each cylinder pressure checked would be my next step.
My 4.5 has only needed 0.5 litres of oil in 4000km so I would say your oil consumption (or loss) is high.
Little black spots from exhaust are probably water (condensation) with soot from inside exhaust blown out on start up.

Like has been said here - perhaps the rings are not sealing as well as they should, so a compression test would help show any failings in this area.
Post results here - so others can tell you what is normal.
As a guide - readings should be within a few per cent of each other.
Some engines do not like sustained very high speed running near the red line .. the result being that a lot of the oil ends up at the top of the engine and it does not drain away quick enough. Not heard of this on a Cerb before though..
Also - perhaps an oil breather is blocked - does the Cerb use conventional oil breathing ?

It used the conventional breathing when it first happened at high speed.
After that I had a drive on the motorway where I did not exceed speeds of 140km/h. Suddenly I had a big blue cloud of smoke out of the right exhaust. Not driving fast but i did give it full throttle sometimes to get as fast from 90 to 130/140lm/h.
After this i mounted the oiltank and closed the connection at the airbox. Now it pushes the oil through the breathercap on tank.

the smoke from the exhaust is concerning, but cerbie blow a LOT of oil out of the breather. if you run it without the breather pipe on and rev it a couple of times the radiators and front of the engine bay are covered in oil, this is on every car i've ever seen. So to have oil coming out of the breather in itself is not unusual, in fact its very usual .. but oil all over the screen and out of the exhaust is concerning..
This worked for me.....

It's a custom spec catch can with baffle plate stuffed with stainless scourer pads. It exhausts into both intakes as oppose to just the one, but with the pads in, virtually no oil mist makes it as far as the intakes.
Most standard cars will ingest quite a bit of oil into the drivers side intakes under full load/high rpm which isn't a good thing.

To correct there is not coming any blue smoke out of the exhaust. I did a compressiontest yesterday and the results were that 4 cilinders are bad/underperforming. The other 4 are ok but the difference between the performance/compression of the good cilinders is also considerable. The way we tested we could not see which cilinder belonged where in the block.
On hearing the engine turning our conclusion is that one cilinderbank is damaged. While it happened (oil over the windscreen) I saw watertemp going over the 100 mark to about 110 and quite quickly going under again.

110 water temp, blue smoke and oil on the windscreen?
