I come once again to the collective wisdom of the P&P to ask this time about my new Lava Lamp.

Having no clue about these things myself, I'm hoping someone can tell me if mines is buggered!

It stands almost 3ft tall and takes about 5 hours to heat itself up and decide to do anything interesting. When it gets up and running, as you can imagine, it is what I would expect a Lava Lamp to behave like.

Lots of squidgey bubbles floating merrily up and down causing contained chaos amongst themselves.

But then the next day these bubbles seem to have dissapeared and now I am left with one large dormant blob at the bottom of the lamp!

It looks like this.

It hasn't grown/moved for about two hours now!

Very un-interesting!

Am I supposed to turn it off and let it cool or something?

TIA!

No, it certainly gets hot enough. I just put the length of time down to it being quite a big lamp with a 100W bulb to heat it up so I didn't think that was too much to worry about.

Is it possible that it has got too warm by being left on for a couple of consecutive days?

Surely not?!

I used to have a Telstar. Took an hour or so to get going but never stopped until it was turned off.

Probably got the wrong bulb in, have you checked the wattage? Is there a recommended wattage printed anywhere?

Is it fairly old? The "lava" does age, and over time will stop moving about like it does when new. If it's a Matmos (I think thats what they are called) then you can buy replacement tops. If you google the name it should take you to their site.

I've got a Mathmos one that I've had for 10 of 15 years. Don't use it much but I do like it with the lights on low smile

It takes about an hour to warm up properly. It's basically coloured wax in a coloured liquid with a lower specific gravity than the hot wax, but higher than the solid wax smile

It takes a 40w bulb.

They do have a limited shelf life but it depends how often it's used and whether it's shaken up or not! Mine is still fine.

However, if you read the instructions properly you will see that they're not supposed to be on for more than 6 hours IIRC. Best way to run it is on a timeswitch, used to have mine on 6pm until midnight
