Who lives in the oldest house?
Discussion
Following on from the earlier post about living in an old house, it got me wondering if there were any PHers who lived in a really old house...
I reckon our house is about 200 or so years old - the neighbouring manor house is 17th century in parts although records show a house on that site in the at least the 14th century.

That's mental. Any details? One of the previous owners was quite a character. His name was Charles-Claude-Barthelemy and according to records lived a "scandalous" and "agitated" life of debauchery and unscrupulous commercial dealing ( in 1790). He allegedly stole a lot of money from the surrounding villages and fled France for St Lucia. Forgetting to take his wife.
Pretty interesting and quite humbling to live in such an old place.
best,
adam
It's very hard to tell how old houses are beyond a certain point. My parents' garage seems to have been a bakery at some point, and the oven we found in there was dated as around 3-400 years old, the building is believed to have had another use before that, but no-one knows for how long. There has been a building on the site for even longer, but no-one knows whether it was the same one.
The house has now been extended at least four times, and two of the wings that we know were there in the late 1800s no longer are (best guess is that they came down in a storm) at some point in the early 20th century.
Best guess is that the oldest bits of the house are 16th century.

i seem to recall that the farm we are on is recorded in the domesday book, but not sure of the exact details.. think bits of the current main farmhouse are circa 14c. and one of the cottages has an 6 foot ( wide) well in the kitchen floor....
