The Police are rightly lambasted on a day to day basis when they do things wrong, offend someone feelings, abuse someone rights, arrest the wrong geezer or something worse such as the Shooting of that innocent Brazilian traveller.

But they also do aot of good things which generally go unrecognised and barely a mention as it is "their job",so I thought id start an Appreciation Thread.

After reading this mornings papers, i think it only right to throw an unoffical pat on the back, to the force for the apprehension and conviction of the gents conspiring to kill and injure hundreds in a London bomb plot.

Their actions have saved the lives of many and allow us to go on our merry way in relative safety.

Well done boys in blue.

Any other acts that deserve a mention please add.

I love 'em.

I wouldn't bloody well do their job - it isn't all like "The Bill" in reality. Plus, I would probably go blind from all that paperwork.

They're great at covering stuff up and getting away with speeding.

Love 'em, they do a hard job not made any easier by the ridiculous amount of paperwork.

Only met the odd nob-jockey, usually they are green though.

mixed opinion, like anyone else in the world I take them as they are individually rather than as a "brand"

I find that the inexperienced police are the worst, they seem to have been brainwashed into the targets rubbish frown

For the PC's on street (ok, in the carsrolleyes) I have loads of respect. For the morons in charge of them, including the Home Secretary, I have none whatsoever. It seems they just make the actual job of policing so bloody target driven and difficult.

I sometimes wonder if they operate in a parallel universe where everything is Black or White. In our world things tend to be different shades of grey and occasionally coloured. This means that whereas we have to use common sense and take a view on things they can only use YES or NO. Leads them into being petty and small minded at times. They need the support of our universe but they are becoming more alien.

There are good and bad like any profession.

The guys who came and helped me out at my accident were superb.

On balance, I wouldn't want their job so I'd give them a big thumbup

From a friend on the force, I gather that the quality of training (and very probably the recruits themselves) is not quite as it used to be, which may well be a factor in this.

FWIW, I think overall they do a reasonable job within a very difficult and counter-productive framework of initiative and nonsense. What I'm not sure about is if/how we are supposed to fund all the various public sector pensions in future, including those of the Police. Most of this weekends broadsheets carried stories about this pressing issue: The Times

ETA The article in the link dispells the myth that public sector pay is hlower than priovate sector pay - often a justification of high pensions - although in the case of the Police, I think it;s fair to say that there are few of us here who put our nuts quite so firmly onto the block on a 'normal' working day as frontline coppers.

Do the security services get any praise too? You've all seen Spooks on the TV?

I have plenty of respect for real police who try to catch criminals, but only contempt for those who try to catch me on the way to the shops for £80.

I'd echo the comment that most are good....but just like in any job you get the occaisional a*rse who ruins it for everyone. Funnily enough I get the impression that the ar*eholes are as disliked by the other BiBs as they are by the public.

On the whole though I think they're decent people doing a hard and often downright nasty job.

I also have a bit of a thing about women police people, I think it's the uniforms, and handcuffs that does it, and the tights....they do wear tights don't they?

Personally, I have several gripes against them, but also recognise my little complaint compared with the enormity of catching a group of individuals intent on causing havoc and mayhem, where any number of my friends or family could be injured, pales in significance.
