Cover suggestions

The OH is playing a series of gigs with her trio (sax, piano and bass). They played the usual jazz standards at the first one (Misty, Blue Monk etc.), but the promoters say they'd like something a bit more contemporary and up-tempo for the next.

It's a public event so they're not playing to jazz fanatics and the idea is to go for something a bit more cheesy and accesible, including some covers of more pop/rock stuff.

Going a bit more mainstream I wondered if a trio could pull off an instrumental version of Sunshine Of Your Love?

I'd love to see them do Rage or Metallica or something, but I don't think the audience will appreciate it, or for that matter get the joke. So... can you think of any well known tunes from the sixties onwards that could be sucessfully arranged for a jazz trio?

I saw a pretty good band in Preston last week, they reminded me a bit of old school Faith No More, they did a cover of the classic 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun' by Cyndi Lauper, they pulled it off spectacularly well.

Way back when, I used to play in a 'lounge jazz' type band and when we did stuff like that we would roll out a couple of Aztec Camera songs - usually 'Release' from High Land Hard Rain or 'Over My Head' from Stray (though this is slower) but reall pretty much whatever we fancied.

Altenatively we would 'jazzify' some odd songs like 'Lets Lynch The Landlord' by Dead Kennedys or 'Questions and Answers' by Sham 69 which both worked well...
